chassis

Postby hodgson4711 » Thu Jul 02, 2009 7:08 pm

hi, i'm having new wings doors and bottom passenger seal replaced but the chap doing the work for me said no problem but i'm still not addressing my biggest problem the rusty chassis. he said he don't mind doing the work but feels bad taking the money but not getting the chassis problem sorted. we have both looked at the idea of putting my camper onto a doner vehicle but i couldn't do it myself. then he suggested fitting a new ? secondhand chassis. is this a feasable idea or would it be easier to keep paying out at mot time

    Typecast or what! I would have to ask which end of the van we are talking about. If its the rear then a profficient welder should have no trouble grafting on a new rear section. If its the front then you cant replace, only repair. Either way its a matter of economics

thanks muttley, it is the front end hes done the back perfectly i think the main problem is the garage i take it to they seem to find endless problems with it every year i go there sometimes with only 3,000 miles on the clock since the last mot. have taken fred transit's advice this year and going to a different garage.

what difference will a different mot station make ?? the one your using surely cant fail it on rust that isnt there :!: if the chassie has rust then it will need cuttingout and welding, wherether you take it for a test :)

Thats what SHOULD be the case, fact is, the mk5 Luton I did recently was retested at a different MOT station than the first test. I knew that the first station was over the top and thats why I did the repairs that I considered real legitimate failures and left the rest. Sure enough the second station passed it with NO advises  Not good I know but all MOT stations are not the same :( I should know, I started testing in 1981 and have worked in over 10 different staions on Classes 3, 4, 5 and 7. I packed it all in 3 years ago because I was sickened by the dodgy practises within the system.
I have loads of stations locally to choose from and each of them has their "pet" failures, and also their "blind spots" Sad but true I'm afraid.

for a mk1/2 your doing yourself no favours scrapeing it through a test* - best thing is get the repairs done propperly waxoil and underseal so you wont need to do them again in the next 20 yrs

stuff like steps, some places wont fail them some will - but at end of the day any classic mk1 or 2 deserves a fully operating and complete step  these are classic appreciating vehicles and should be looked after

*this isnt the case with non rust related stuff.... bushes and stuff like that some testers are ars*h*l*s and think everything should be like new  it's annoying to change stuff that doesnt really need doing and was no detrement to the vehicles use :!:

if you know what i mean
