Throttle cable req'd for MOT (MK1 Campervan V4 2 litre)

Postby welshrussell » Sat Jul 11, 2009 6:21 pm

Can anyone help me out with a throttle cable as it's MOT time in 2 weeks :?:

The saga of my current throttle cable is....

After buying 3 from ebay and finding them to be all too short (no matter what it said on the packet) I got one made for me from a company in South Wales after I sent them the old one.

The problem was on the new one, the holes in the nipples were way too big (and the nipples were bigger than the originals) and it keeps falling off the carb lever.

I sort of held it in place with a cable tie, but it's just not up to the job :(

So I'm needing a new cable or a sleeve that goes over the nipple. The current sleeve slides over the nipple but the cable still pops out

All the ones on ebay always come sealed in a packet so the seller can't tell me the cable lengths and just goes by what it says on the packet :?

What I would be needing is a cable with an inner length of 52 inches and a sleeve of 45 inches.

Hope someone can help, cause I can tell yer, it's not pleasant to drive right now, thinking any minute now that cable is going to ping off

So if anyone has a spare one they are willing to sell or know where I can get the correct length one, please let me know :?:

Many thanks

Russell :D

Go to your local push bike shop! (NOT HALFRAUDS!!) and get the inner and outer cable by the meter, then get some crimp on ends.....simplejss :D

I've done this for no end of older vehicles, I keep a stock of it in the shed :D

First you should claim the money back on the three you've bought if they're wrong.
Second I agree with the Halfords comment, give them anything to do other than sell something 100% bog standard and they're useless.
Third,if you are totally stuck let me know,I think I've some odd cables kicking about here somewhere.

Gutted - Bike Shop can't help me :(

So I've got a week to find the correct cable :o

It needs to have a sleeve of 45 inches and an inner cable of 52 inches.

Here's a photo of the cable I had made up for me (from Speedy Cables).

They used the totally wrong nipples (they're massive) and the holes are far bigger than the originals. - I don't know why I bothered having one made then

Hope you can save my hide Kevin  :?:

To be honest Russel the pictures you posted look like the cables I've got.On the carb you should have a ball end that is a reasonable fit inside the hole in the cable. Then a piece of spring steel slides oner the nipple and locks the ball end inside the hole in the nipple. Is that what you have ?

Yes - that's exactly what I've got :D

But the problem is - Speedy cables made the new nipples thicker/bigger than the old ones and didn't give me any new spring steel sleeves.

So when I put the old sleeves on it expands them so much, the nipple just falls off the ball and won't hold it in place:?:

Hence me trying to keep the dam things on with tiny cable ties

Does this make sense now :?:

Is it possible to grind the nipple down on the opposite side to the hole and on the sides so that the spring clip isn't forced open so much ?.
Or can you get hold of a couple of those very small petrol pipe clips and fit them on the nipplt, either side of the ball on the carb so that they hold it in?.

OK - I'll give the grinding a go.

There is a classic porsche (1950/60's) garage across the road from me.

If they're still open when I get home from work, I'll ask them tonight if they could help me out :D

Cool :D

I've just come back from the garage over the road and the nice chap over there kindly put my nipples on his bench grinder

They are now a lot slimmer than before which make the steel sleeves close together better.

I'm going to the van tomorrow night to see if the ball joints will now stay in the cable nipple :?:

Cheers Kevin - good suggestion :D

Can you not drill a hole through the nipple and use an 'R' clip to secure it on the ball joint?

PRAISE THE LORD :D

At last - lady luck smiled down on me - well, for the first 10 minutes, then I dropped the steel sleeve into the mud on the farm and spent ages rolling around on the floor under the van looking for it

However, I found it and both ends are now securely fastened to where they should be 8)

MOT time next week and now I can drive there without fear of my throttle cable falling off.

A happy boy I am indeed :D
