MK2 petrol engine swap

Postby Jorgo » Mon Jul 20, 2009 11:20 am

Howdy,

Recently I bought a MK2 camper, from '79. It has a 1.6 liter petrol engine, which isn't running very good.

I am looking to chance the engine, if possible for a little bit bigger, stronger engine.

As far as I have found out till so far the easiest swap would be for a 2.0 liter ohc engine.

Can anybody confirm this, and does it fit to the gearbox from the 1.6 engine (4 gears). Or are there other, better engine's which can be put in the MK2 easily :?:

Hopefully somebody has experience with this, I would gladly like to hear :D

Greetings, Jorgo

The easiest by far would be a 2.0l OHV (Pinto), as its a straight swap :D

If you want to go a little further you could put a 5 speed gearbox in as well, you would need the gearbox crossmember from the donor vehicle to do this

If your mechanical ability is fairly good then a 2.5 Di (diesel) and MT75 gearbox is not a difficult job if you have a donor vehicle for parts!

To chance it for a diesel is what I would like most, however, unfortunately my mechanical skills aren't that good. So I will probably go for a 2.0l ohc than.

A 5 speed gearbox would make it a lot better, so maybe I can do that as well. I'll search for a vehicle which has both the engine and the gearbox.

Thanks for the info Rover :!:

Is the 2.0l OHC Pinto engine the same one Ford used in some Sierra's and Escorts?

Are there any other models Ford used that engine in? That would make it a lot easier to find one :)

yes cortinas mk3/4/5 granadas too :D

but they use the high compression engine the transits use the low compression engine - but as yours is a camper you'll be fine with the high compression car engines :D

Ok :)

And is it also possible then to connect the high compression engine to the gearbox already in my transit (4 gears), or will I need to swap the gearbox too :?:

All the Pinto engines have the same bell housing bolt pattern, so you dont have to change the gearbox if you dont want to :D
