V4 Essex Engine - Leaky Water hose question?

Postby welshrussell » Sun Aug 02, 2009 6:49 pm

Well, today after taking the van for a test run before going on holiday next Thursday - I sprung a leak :o

After about 80 miles of A roads and a good cruise I was about 200 metres from home when the temp started going up pretty quickly  , so I pulled in stuck my head under the bonnet, to find - water pishing all over my dizzy cap :?

Looks like a tiny pin head size hole appeared in my hose that comes from the water pump to the thermostat housing. It's on the bottom left of this photo:

So, I let her cool down, whipped some duct tape around it, refilled the rad and then finally got the van parked up

So my question is, do I need any special pipe or is there a certain type/size I should be asking for :?:

I've taken off the leaky one and will get to a motor factors on Wednesday to ask them if they have something like this in stock :?

Check out the Progress Reports Section if you want to see some photos of my MK1 Campervan after it's respray and engine rebuild 8)

When I need hoses like that I go to a hydraulics retailer in my town here in holland. He has rubber hoses in every size and most of the times that's much cheaper than bying (original) parts from a dealer. A few months ago I had a leak in a hose that's between the oil reservoir and the oil pump of my power steering system on my '95 transit. The Ford dealer could order an original hose for €42,-, but at the hydaulics retailer I bought a piece of rubber hose that fitted perfectly for only €3,-

I guess that coul work as well for your cooling system.

Cheers Ed - I reckon you are right about this :?

I think an original part would be way too expensive (if you could find one) :o

Right - all sorted from the Factors with water hose, everything bolted back on and refilled - she seems to be running ok now :D

Even managed to pick up a new engine temp sender :D
