Cleaning the clutch of a Ford Transit 1978 camper

Postby Ford Transit Aussies » Wed Aug 26, 2009 1:24 pm

Gday all,
We're currently in Norway with our camper but have had problems with the clutch slipping and poor acceleration. We read the manual and it said that cleaning the clutch could be the answer to the dilemma.
We want to try and do this ourselves, any advice on doing this? (tools, steps, cautions etc)
This would be greatly appreciated

Cleaning the clutch can only be done by taking the gearbox off. If you are that far, I'd just replace it. Only thing you could do without taking the box off, is blowing compressed air
at it. If the clutch is slipping this is caused by excessive wear or by oil leakage through the rear cranckshaftseal. The wear you should have noticed earlier, because the point where the clutch bites (read hight of the pedal), will shift noticeably through time. Good luck!

We aren't specifically sure its the clutch slipping. It is just that the car looses power under acceleration. When I press the accelorator quickly it doesn't accelorate it just splutters and backfires a bit. The engine doesn't exactly race like it says it should if it was the clutch slipping. It is more like it dies. If I accelerate slowly it is fine. Could this be because of an ingnition or timing problem. Thanks for the help.

It dont sound like the clutch at all :!:

Check and adjust the points gap in the dizzy.
Clean the terminals in the dizzy cap.
Clean the rotor arm.
Remove plugs and clean them up then re gap them.

If its still the same get a can of carb cleaner, remove the air filter and spray down the jets you can see.

If you still have no joy then you may need to replace the plugs and leads.

This is all assuming its a petrol of course

If the engine is revving normaly in gear & you are not getting far may be a smell of burning then its probably the clutch If none of this applies it could be any number of things Distributer Timeing Carb valves if you are not to clever with the spanners try & get into a garage & stick the diagnostics on it should`nt cost you a lot to find out whats wrong , Its fixing it that may be costly
I`m to old to lie under Transits

Sounds like the accelerator pump jet is blocked or the accelerator pumps had it.Another cause could be a low fuel level in the carb.A duff plug could also be breaking down under pressure.

although this started as a clutch question, i,m inclined to go along with bakersdozen re: carburetta as these carbs were nothing but trouble from day one.
