ALTERNATIVE RUBBER STOPS FOR REAR AXLE OF DUAL WHEEL MARK 1?

Postby Rolo » Fri Apr 14, 2006 3:45 am

Has anybody ever had to remove the rubber stops directly above the rear axle in Mark 1 Transits with dual rear wheels?

It's raining and cold outside so I cannot have a look to measure anything and I was thinking of replacing the rubber stops with slightly taller ones (1-2") to prevent the wheels touching the floor which it will do if overloaded and in rough roads (no wheel arches in this one).

What are the alternatives to these rubber stops?

Air bags?

Rubber stops with progressive compaction so they actually help the springs at some stage before suddenly going bump?

There has to be something better than what Ford decided to put in this thing 33 years ago.

This job will have to be done in conjunction with newer and slightly higher springs, of course, and one or two inches higher is what I had in mind.

You could space the original units or fit polly bags

Or fit an extra leaf
I went with the extra leaf after lowering my falcon wagon 2" and found that it bottomed out with engines in the back

the leaf that i used just bolted on and stoped it from hitting the bump rubber it also raised the car by 1/2"

Also you can only space the bump rubber 1/3 closer to the axle to remain legal, You should really look for an alternative to using the bump rubber as this way could end in disaster

My idea was to raise the suspension by one or two inches AND do something with the rubber stop.

Do you know how long the thread is and how thich a washer I can put in there?

If you want the van to go up a bit higher, fit another leaf in the spring.
