timing belt gone?!! signs?

Postby dandare » Mon Dec 28, 2009 7:51 pm

hey all, just managed to get towed home. the van cut out as i was coming to a stop in traffic. wouldn't start back up, sounded a bit like more whirring going on than usual. also light next to oil appears(handbrake?) it was due the belt being done soon, possibly sooner 8) any clear cut ways to determine the fault? batt. alternator. fuel all ok.

This is a di I presume? If so then it will sound different when cranking, take out the oil filler cap and look in with a torch whilst the engine is turned. If you see the valve gear moving then the belt is still on, if not, its broke

ye sorry it's a 2.4 di. def. making a different sound on cranking. i'll have a look down the oil cap in the morn. i have a belt and pump there for it. typical, just kept putting it off whilst deciding whether to get a new van! decided yesterday to hold on to this one till the tax and mot ran out! d'oh! ah well hopefully it'll just be my time that it takes to get it back on the road. hopefully no more damage as i was going 10mph or less at the time. what's the warning light about?

2.5di, the warning light isn't for the handbrake as they don't have one, what does it look like?

It will be a low brake fluid lamp, it comes on whilst cranking as a test. You dont normally see it as di's start pretty quick when all is well  If you are unlucky you may have broken some rockers and/or bent push rods. Cheap to fix with breakers bits :)

The light you are describing is the Low brake Fluid light.

To check the pushrods and rockers you need to remove the rocker cover and the rocker assembly

If you are used to the sound of a healthy DI cranking over, one with a snapped timing belt will sound very different.

A timing belt failure in a 2.5DI is as routine as you will ever experience for a major mechanical failure of any vehicle. Which is why I love that engine. With any luck you'll just have bent a selection of pushrods, worst case, broken a few rocker arms.

Once you have the rocker cover off, the damage will be very obvious, bent pushrods will look something like this.

A new set of rods is around £20 new from a transit parts place, you will need to adjust the valve clearances if you replace the pushrods, something I didn't do when it happened to me, then wondered why it wouldn't start  .

Re: timing belt gone?! now help needed!!

ok so, state of play at the moment. stripped it all back. the belt hasn't snapped, the bottom pully has stripped teeth from the belt so will just spin. so what's my next move. i can't manully crank it so how do i go about locking off the engine? or will the timing be out now regardless? have belt, pump etc.. just waiting on the know how about best way forward the guide i was following was for replacement before it goes! so i need some new steps i think. also with the belt stripping some teeth off is the chance of damge to rods etc.. the same will i need to have a look?

If it's stripped the belt then you need to just treat it as a broken belt.

once you have the push rods for the valves out to see if any are bent , you can move the crank , pump and cam pulleys into place easy enough with a socket on the pump nut , cam nut and crank pulley nut

have a look at the rocker arms and shaft to make sure the are ok while you have them off to check push rods , when mine went i had a bent shaft and 2 cracked rockers as well as 4 bent push rods

when you take rocker shaft off look out for miss matched heights of valve stems , if any are low suspect bent valve ( rare on the di ) this can be a cause of not being able to turn engine by hand as the head stops piston passing ,

if any are very high , cry

Stripped belt on crank pulley is what happened to one of mine.

From your position now, assuming you haven't kippered any valves. I would do the following, starting with nackered belt off, and clear up all the shredded teeth bits. Then;

1) Remove rocker cover
2) Remove rocker gear (therefore allowing all valves to close)
3) Pull out all pushrods
-Inspect and replace any nackered rocker gear components.
4) Adjust crankshaft position to TDC, 18mm spanner on crank pulley at front of engine, lock flywheel
5) Move camshaft to correct timing position, it will turn by hand with no rods in place, lock camshaft pulley
6) Move injection pump pulley to correct spot, lock that
7) Replace pushrods and rockergear
8 ) New belt on, tension etc.
9) Adjust valve clearances.
10) Remove locking pins, rotate crankshaft twice, re-fit pins to check timing.

Assume you have a haynes manual, it will help...

ok so i got the rocker cover off clear damage to some rods, which i'll replace. the rockers? have slipped off the rods so are sitting a bit skew whiff, once they are removed will they line up again, any signs of damage i should look for? no haynes manual, just trying to use the advice here. valve clearances? how do i go about setting these? the rest of the points w.goose made seem clear! as clear as the great how to ye did, which i followed for stripping out! ta.

Try this for refitting belt  viewtopic.php?f=18&t=56801
