2.5Di fuel pump.. smoke screw??!

Postby Boycie » Wed Sep 28, 2005 6:45 pm

Howdy!!!

Well my Transit is still plodding along nicely, carting about pretty much anything I need :D

I must say though, I'm still using mucho fuel compared to my last vehicle!

What I would like to know is, can I adjust the pump to inject less fuel (and make it more economic). I know people used to turn up the fuelling to get a bit more ooomph on older diesels.

Anyone know what to do? It's a '94 SWB with the 'nanna engine.

Cheers
:D

How many miles are you getting out of a tank and what kind of driving are you doing?

Well I'm doing mainly A-road runs, normally at a steady 50-60ish. Also often with a very light load (a cylinder head or couple of tyres etc).

I never fill the tank full (don't know why...) but always put in £20. That gives me halfway between the 1/4 and 1/2 mark on the gauge.

That gets me 120 miles if I'm lucky, which works out at 26mpg.

A bit low?

Yeah that sounds about right. As for messing with the pump think you might be best off leaving that well alone!

Yeah I suppose I would do more harm than good...!

I'm unfortunately used to an Astravan TD (Isuzu) that did a genuine 45mpg... 240 miles to £20.

I think the RWD, slab-like aerodynamics and weight must kill a Transits economy!

Plus of course there is a bit of a difference in weight and engine size!

Yeah, I think I'm expecting a bit much!!

I was thinking the lack of a turbo would make a bit of a diffence. Regardless, I think a full service is due anyway :)

Boyce is yours the 6 stud wheel type? what ratio is your back axle? - have a look there should be a little ally tag on it with something like 4.5:1
you may be able to fit a higher ratio axle that will improve fuel consumption!! :D

Yeah it is Luke,
I'll check out the ratio!!

Can you change the diff seperately, by pulling the halfshafts out?

4.63 is about the highest high speed axle your gonna find from 1992 onwards most you look at are 5.14 meaning 5.14 turns of the prop to one turn of the wheel, so the 4.63 only has to turn its prop 4.63 times to turn the wheel once all that meaning its better on motorways but around town 5.14 is better. :D broke hundreds of Tranys 1992 and newer and have never seen any axle starting with a 3. anything :?

Cheers guys :D

It also whines like crazy.... it drowns out the (very well insulated) engine noise at some speeds!

Is it an 'ok' job to replace?

Do I have to remove the whole axle? Or can I pull the shafts out and slide the diff out of the casing?

Could I fit another ratio and would it be worth it?!!!

Sorry for all the q's

Not sure if an earlier 3.91 diff will fit in your axle a 3.91 will be a twin wheeler axle!! mabe the diff is the same but im not sure!! :?

if yours was a 5.14 you could go to a 4.63 easy but as yours is the 4.63 according to geoff thats the best your gonna get as standard!! :(

as for the diff swap ive never done it on one of those but im sure someone on here will have!!! :)
