Heater Blower not working

Postby Abcd123 » Wed Jun 05, 2019 11:29 pm

The heater in my 2000 Ford Transit has not been working since I bought the van. I today searched the forum for possible issues, however after checking all this it’s still not working. I have checked the 30amp fuse, I have checked the wires to the motor and the heater switch are plugged in and not burnt. I have NOT replaced the resistor as I think that the heater should still work on the 3rd speed even if this has failed (correct me if I am wrong). Please help on what I should check next as I am beginning to think the actual motor has failed and don’t have the knowledge on replacing this. I will attach pictures of wiring for the switch so you can see that they are not burnt. Thanks

Heater 01.JPG
This is a pic of the heater fixings. From memory stick your head on the clutch pedal, remove all the clutter, unfasten the white ...fixings and pull the fan out, think it needs a twist.

Hi so I pulled the motor of following your instructions was actually quite a pain, I put 12v directly to the motor and it did not work, any idea how much these should cost to replace and should I get a genuine used one or new copy part.

I managed to pick up a second hand one on from a breaker for £20. Thanks for the offer though. I have now found the heater only works on speed 3 so have ordered a new resistor from Eurocarparts.

Did you order the correct resistor, later ones (mid 1997 on) are up next to motor, inside the heater box.

Earlier ones (up to mid 1997) are next to the drivers headlight

Hi yes it was the right resistor I found it’s inside the dash (thanks to this forum) however now when I use the heater it is only warm for the first few minutes on 3 and then cold, if I keep it on 1 it’s slightly warm. I have checked the coolant level and flushed it too (with the van off) and it’s still not working.

Are the pipes going into the cab getting hot :?: Is the fan working on three speeds now :?: The fan will not be the issue with the pipes not getting hot

The heater pipes go into the cab through the bulkhead, there are two pipes side by side about 20mm diameter, one is hot supply into heater matrix, the other is the return from the heater matrix, look behind the rear of the engine one pipe comes from along the RH side of the rocker cover.

Most likely cause of no heater is the thermostat is fecked, or missing.

Hi can you check if It’s these pipes I have circled.
If it is these, I have checked them both and both are warm, not hot at all, I checked after driving for 30 mins or so and both were warm whilst everything else was hot.

yes, if the pipes are not hot then I would check the thermostat is operating correctly, start from cold and feel the top hose near the rad as it warms up it should stay cold until the temp gauge hits normal, then get hot as the thermostat opens and lets hot water into the radiator.

Fit a genuine Ford thermostat to it as aftermarket ones wont work most times.

The heater is an air mix unit. The heater pipes are permanently at engine temp, there's no water valve, the air is mixed in the heater to give the required ....temp. Maybe the shutters in the unit are sticking but I'd say the hot water flow thru' the heater is restricted, try flushing then reverse flushing also test for crushey pipe, blockage etc. Flush from the pipe at the front of the head to the return under the header tank, check the head outlet is clear. Be careful, I've had one snap.
Could be the water pump is not up to scratch.
