2,5 TD with Bosch conversion cuts off

Postby matthias » Wed Feb 12, 2020 11:32 pm

Hi,

really wanted to write an article about my very successfully Epic to Bosch conversion, but didn`t so far, but will do soon, it`s already written, but need to sort the photos ec.

But now, after nearly 5000 km since the conversion I got a problem.
Car did always run perfectly, but then it "cuts off", so I got home behind a friend`s tow car.

At home I first thought it`s an electric problem, but it wasn`t, at least I think so.

Then I checked the petrol pump (at the engine) and thought of a fault there, so I put another one in.
No success.
Then I checked the diesel filter if it`s full: Yes it was.
Then check at one of the fuelpipes at the injektor, if diesel comes out: Yes, a bit.
Still not starting
Then check of the cut off selenoid on the Inj. pump, if it clicks: Yes, it did.
Checked it not only with the ign switched live (which I took from the Epic loom), but also with a 12 V direct from the battery.
Still not starting.
Also took out that selenoid and removed the small "piston" and spring to overcome a possible problem with the thing.
Still not starting
Then yesterday I bought another cheap Bosch pump and took off the selenoid of that one to put in my pump.
Still nothing.

It`s a shame, after all these troublefree miles, sh... `
Any ideas?

Thanks!

Must be fuel supply problem then, will it run from a can direct to the injection pump?
If not, probably injection pump fault.
If it will then the problem is further down the line, lift pump? blocked pipe? tank vent blocked?

Tried the petrol pump of the engine and fitted a new one from another transit; it works and the filter is full of diesel, so there is not a problem from the tank.
As I said, also tried the selenoid, which is ok.

Question for me is at the moment: Why is there is no (adeqate) supply from the petrol pump tp the injectors?

Or may it be that I have to disconenct /open the pipe fittings to all of the 4 injectors (at the moment I only did that on one of them) to bleed the system?
But on experience that is not really necessary, or?

They can be a pain to bleed air from the injection pump, make sure the fuel filter is full and fuel is flowing freely when cranked, open the nipple on the side of the top of the injection pump and crank the engine until fuel flows freely, close the nipple and remove injector pipes from the injectors, crank the engine until bubbles stop and fuel is shooting out in a powerful jet from all injector pipes, then refit injector pipes and see if she starts.

I have a small electric fuel pump that I plumb in to the pump inlet and use it to prime and bleed air, then once running remove the electric pump and connect the original system back, it saves the starter and the battery. :D
