Its a Bosch VE probably from a fairly early Mk3/4/5 as its got the old style cold start.

The big clue is the word Bosch stamped just to the left of the triangular plug in pic 3

thanks
does the cold start advance the pump timing during warm up as well as increasing engine speed?
thanks george

Yup Bosch VE 113 fitted to 70hp engines from 94-00 and yes cold start moves the pumps camplate to advance timing

thanks
so am i right in thinking that the coldstart devise only gets 12v after a engine warm up period ?and so then goes to normal engine idle speed?
thanks george

I think there is a temp sensor/switch on the engine block that it gets its 12v feed from? in the cold start device is some sort of waxy stuff that pulls when really cold and then the 12v heater kicks in and it slowly releases.

In the UK you don't really need the temperature sensor if you're going to use the pump to convert from an EPIC system, the wax stat only needs about a minute or so to warm up. The advantages of the sensor is that it is that it cuts the power to the cold starter saving voltage to start the engine, and keeps that power cut whilst the weather is seriously cold and the engine needs more time to warm up.

Without the temperature sensor in place the cold starter is drawing power all the time, so if you turn on the ignition but don't start the engine for a minute or so you'll loose the advantage of the cold starter.

No idea what temperature the sensor switches at. At least 30*c would make sense at that would allow a cold start effect at most ambient temperatures without drawing power at ignition on.

If you don't want to use the cold start at all just don't wire it in, somebody has already slackened off the pull cable to disable the mechanical side on that pump. Assuming your going to use that pump that is.

I've never had one with a cold start fitted only had them on pumps I've swapped and just took the cold start off and fitted a blank, so I've never seen the electrical side of them, but I've got my head round it a bit better thanks to your your explanation Mat 8)

They may have changed things internally and the fuelling settings, but it should still be timed up just the same using the pins.
