One bolt missing on the rocker arm! How do I get a new one?

Postby mkgld » Tue May 04, 2021 8:41 pm

Hi!!
Trying to solve a really bad issue of white smoke and the van overacerlerating randomly, I am checking some things that the users suggested here.
Now I was doing the valve clrearance and I have found out that there is one bolt of the rocker arm shaft missing and another one totally loose, almost falling.
No Idea where did that missing bolt gone, and that scares me.
But I will need to buy a get one.

Can anyone please tell me where can I check the right size or part number, and where can I buy it?

Thanks!!

I can’t remember if it’s a special bolt or not but I would remove the rocker shaft and push rods use a pice of cardboard make some holes to put the rods into so you can keep them in the same order to go back in and the get magnet on a sick you can get telescopic ones from tool shops and stick it down all the holes in the head . Usually they land on top of the head and don’t go down into the sump have a good look round it may be still there.

Thanks!
I did the valves clearance four years ago and I don't know if that bolt was there by then.
I have never removed the rocker shaft and push rods and I must admit it sounds a little intimidating.
Can you point me in the right direction?
Trying to find info in the forum with no luck.

I already have that mighty life saver telescopic magnet.

Thanks!

It’s just remove the the I think 17 mil bolts at the top of the posts and at the bottom on some of the posts they’re is a 13 mil bolt then it just lifts off and as I say keep the pushrods in the same order they come out but before you remove it have a good look around it maybe hiding on the top in a recess covered in oil.

As Dumper says, most of these are found hiding up top, get your latex glove on and have a dig about

Hi, today I found pictures of the last lime I did the valve clearence four years ago and that screw was missing, so must be missing for a long time.
Anyway I had a better look and pass the magnet around without removing the shaft and I could´t find it.

I removed one of the remaining bolts and don´t see how they could fall into the holes, they are too big. Or I am missing something?
Thanks !

Today I compared them and the shaft bolts are a little bit longer, but I have not measured them yet.

The parts catalogue suggests the bolts should all be the same length....

Ford part no is 4380670. Its an M6x16mm flanged bolt - any hardware shop should have one (although you will want a washer to go with it - if its not flanged like the original ones). If you can only get a longer one, put a nut on it and cut the excess off (nut will keep the cut square and clean any swarf which will stop it screwing in easily...

Or look on ebay for 4380670 (its used in lots of applications - e.g. thermostat housings) as well as the rocker shaft, so don't be too put off by the descriptions

It will be cheaper to find something locally (probably even at a ford dealer) than the postage cost though...

It looks like they are about £1 new at Ford

I already asked in the only workshop in town and they can´t or don´t want to help me, but I will call a few places around, I will let you know how that goes.
I really don´t care if I have to pay more than what it really cost for the shipping, just to go to another town cost me around 20 euros, and a few hours, thats how isolated I am.
Thank you so much!

It's always nice if people who come here to solve a problem, stay afterwards to share what they've learned with the next person 8) :D
