How fast your 2.5di warms at winter?

Postby Ransettimies » Sat Oct 23, 2021 6:22 pm

I noticed at summer that my transit is not so fast what comes engine warming.

I got thermostat that works (i see engine temp at aux heater panel) and there is no leaks st cooling system. It tooks about 10kilometers to open thermostat (temp gage pointer shows N letter) when outside temp is +5-0 celcius.

And even at summer it wont open like two kilometers.

Is that normal? I know these DI:s are pretty effient for that age but warming is more poor than many newer diesels which are cold at winter.

My old MK3 at this temperature of 0 ... + 5 degrees Celsius also heats up until the thermostat is triggered with a run of about 10 kilometers.
In the summer you need 2 ... 3 kilometers to warm up.
Older DI diesels consume more fuel and therefore heat up faster.

Yes its normal, they do take a few km's to reach normal running temp and longer as the temperature drops

I remember that when we got the first di transit it came with the heater recirculation control and it said in the handbook that it was to be used to aid cold warm up and to open up to outside air once the van was upto temperature as the engine was slow to warm up . At that time it wasn’t fitting to the petrol engine van unlike nowadays when it’s fitted to many vehicles.

I put a piece of ply wood down in front of my radiator when it gets colder, helps to warm it up a bit quicker but not a lot, never overheats though even when stuck in traffic.

I used to run my mk5 with the viscus fan removed and only put it on if it was really hot got away with running the heater full on if traffic was standing for a short time . I was going to fit a electric fan but never got round to it .

I also put cardboard in front of the radiator, but with a working thermostat, this does not give any gain, but it can lead to overheating of the motor in difficult road conditions.
A friend of mine from Belarus had an accident one winter and smashed a radiator.
He plugged the rubber cooling hoses, poured water into the cooling system and drove home several hundred kilometers without a radiator at low speed.
The engine was cooled by a van heater radiator.

I did it another truck but it wont help heating speed. If you dont drift at city with heavy throttle fan is useless at winter

is it possible to bi-pass the cooling water to the oil cooler ....

that could make a difference ..weather detrimental or not i don't know ..because as well as cooling the oil ..it heats it up

but what actuality happens is when you start up from cold you are heating up 5 litres plus of engine oil plus 5 litres plus of coolant..

Perhaps an inline thermostat in the oil cooler coolant circuit ,..these are available as a bi-pass thermostat - so they don't block the flow they divert it .

all the best.mark
