2.5Di Won’t Start

Postby Fletch27011968 » Sat Nov 13, 2021 2:03 pm

Hello Help needed please.
I have a R registered Transit (None Turbo)

I get nothing when I turn ignition on - The LED Light (in Headlining) is flashing.

I can start the starter motor by putting a positive on - but won’t start obviously as fuel pump not running.

Can I just take a wire from positive on ignition switch to back of Fuel pump? Is it easy to access the fuel pump positive or do I have to remove fuel lines to get to?

Any pictures or videos would be great.

Thank you.

Is it flashing normally, as it does when at rest, or is it flashing quickly :?:

In that case, check the two unmarked 5a fuses in the bottom RH corner of the "drivers knee" fusebox.

Sorry for delay - turns over ok when you bypass put on a positive on starter / yes timing belt replaced several months ago running fine since.
Not starting on key, Chechen all fuses OK.

The under battery fuses and holders are notorious for looking ok but not passing power, so they need to be checked with a meter to make sure that power is coming in and out of them. It may be possible to get it running in the short term with bypassing depending on what injection pump is fitted, bosch is ok, lucas isn't.

Checked fuses under bonnet- all pulling a current through.

How can I check that there is power going to the fuel pump?

When using easy start, the engine began to come to life, hence I’m concerned there is a problem with fuel delivery to actually turn over.

As mentioned above, ignition does come on, all hazards and lights work. When key is turned, there is no turn over at all. Hot wiring from positive from battery to solenoid does turn it over but I does not start up.

Could there be a fault in the fuel gauge and the tank has been ran dry without me realising? I’ll dip the tank to double check, but this sound like it could be the problem? When the van initially died, it did slowly just stop running.

There is an ignition relay bottom left of fusebox labelled with a roman 1 here https://www.autogenius.info/ford-transi ... x-diagram/
and I think you said you have already checked immobiliser fuses 32 and 33 ?

I assume being non turbo it has the bosch VE injection pump? if so look at the back of the pump just above where the injector pipes exit from the square iron section and find the wire going to the fuel stop solenoid(part no 240 here) https://dieselcatalog.online/en/bosch/0 ... 14119.html (Hover mouse over to zoom in the picture)

and check that there is a +12v feed to the wire there with the ignition turned on, if there is power there then touch the connector on and off the solenoid spade terminal and listen closely and you should hear the solenoid clicking as it engages and disengages.
With +12v to the solenoid and the same to the starter solenoid it should turn over and start if the rest of the fuel system and engine are in good working order, which it sounds they are becasue it runs on easy start.

Check, replace or bypass the relay on the bulkhead behind passenger side dash.
You pull out the cubby in the top of the dash above the glovebox to access it.
