Front Crankshaft seal leaking

Postby meerkatmag » Wed Jun 22, 2022 2:44 pm

Hi All,
I have a leak from the front crankshaft seal - I think anyway, hard to see exactly where it's coming from, but dripping down from this area. The oil is dripping down the sump and being blown all over the place.

I'm struggling to find anyone I trust to change the seal. So considering using some oil seal conditioner. like Forte Seal Conditioner. Reading about this online 50% of people are saying it's amazing and works perfectly, the other 50% say it'll ruin your engine.
Is it worth trying this?

And does anyone know of a garage in the North of England willing to work on these old transits who are experienced doing this? kind of job I'd have a go myself but worried about messing up the timing.

Help appreciated!

I wouldn’t worry about cocking up the timing as long as you get the locking pins in and you slacken the 4 bolts inside the pump drive before tensioning the belt and tightening them up before you remove the pins it’s probably the easiest belt to change.
The latest type belt tensioner is a bit of a faff to get right if the older type is still available with the spring it’s really easy .
Never used the sealer myself but I’ve heard from local garage that has had to replace seals after someone had tried it it hardens up the seals and you could end up changing them all .
Your oil leak could also be the camshaft seal you really need the cover off to check .

Thanks I might consider trying it. here's a picture if it helps identify the source.

I carefully examined the photo, it is quite possible that the oil does not flow through the crankshaft oil seal, but the camshaft.
It is necessary to remove the radiator and timing belt protection and inspect the "muzzle" of the motor.
I am against any additives in motor oil.
I didn’t see any benefit from them, but I saw a lot of harm.

if its the cam seal the timing belt will be soaked in oil

Looking at the picture if your going to take it on change the oil pump cover as its got a chunk out of it, the cover comes with the crank seal
