Fuel Pump MK3 1989, 2.0 OHC Petrol Motor

Postby Mauritx » Mon Jul 04, 2022 9:29 pm

Hello, I have some issues with my fuel pump..
There is almost not fuel in the fuelfilter, the one before the carburettor, I believe I have some issues
with the fuel pump, I just take a hammer and knock carefully on the pump and it starts to work
but after I leave the car during the night the problem return (I knock again on the fuel pump and the motor starts).

I bought a new pump and I got just two very thin papper shims (around 1 to 2 mm?), the one that is installed has a thick that is almost 10mm.

I am just wandering if I have to use the thick one or it is enough just using the thin ones? I am afraid of destroying the mechanism inside the motor (a bar perhaps)
is the spring goes too deep inside? I don't know how this work, and I have not tried to mount the new one before asking, just in case.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Are the push levers the same length? the thicker gasket one probably has a longer lever, they fit against an eccentric lobe on the end of the camshaft.

I don't know cause I have not yet dismounted the old one, but perhaps I will measure. I am afraid of getting the eccentric lobe destroyed if the push lever is way tooo long in.

But I believe the better way to know is to measure and in this case I will use the thicker or thinner one.

The 2 thin gaskets fit either side of the spacer gasket, that's why there are 2 of them
there is no lever just a rod on the pinto pumps, i sits against the dizzy shaft not the camshaft :)

Thanks a lot. It sounds logic that there is two of them. Nevertheless it is almost impossible to unscrew the bottom bolt, the oil filter in on the way, Perhaps I have to removed it?

Never had to before ? i use ratchet spanners which makes it easyer :?
it's also easyer if you have the short oil filter.
