Mk3 1989 2.0 Pinto 5 speed Gearbox

Postby Daniel_NL » Mon Jan 30, 2023 8:44 am

Hey guys,

5th gear broke while riding on the freeway and destroyed our gearbox. My mechanic an I are having trouble finding the right information as to which type to look for and what we need to replace the broken one. Would be really helpful if anyone can explain what would fit, and what our exact type is or how to find out this information for ourselves.

It's an 1989 Mk3 Sleeper van by Westafalia with the 2.0 OHC Pinto engine, and the following markings are on the gearbox: 839T(57?)006

Use words like "Type Nine" Type 9" "Type N" "T9"
it was fitted to a lot of ford cars and probably had (not sure) different ratios for each application.
The reason 5th has gone is you let it get low on oil ..5th is the highest gear in the gearbox, it is housed in an extension on the old 4 speed so I'm told. some came with alloy bell housings, others with cast iron ones .

Noticed you said "freeway" so you are not British ..
As well as transits , it was also in these cars from about 1983 onwards
wiki info ..in bold the bit you're interested in.

Ford Capri 1.6, 2.0 1984 onwards, Capri 2.8 1983 onwards, Ford Sierra 1.6, 1.8, 2.0, Sierra XR4i, Sierra XR4x4 2.8 and the Scorpio 4x4 as well as the US market Merkur XR4Ti and Merkur Scorpio.

all the best....mark

Thanks guys,

I've found someone in the Netherlands who has a rebuild Type 9 from a Sierra. Taking my gearbox to him so he can help me get the new one ready for the Transit.

If I'm correct in understanding I will need to use my bell housing, gear leaver mount and complete tail section to make the new one fit. It's mostly VW's here so I'm glad i found someone local with the knowledge I was looking for.

With kind regards,

Daniël

There is an amount of work to change a car box too a transit one. The car one has to be a long input shaft variant too - so measure that before you take anything apart!

long input shaft type9s where in v6 capris and 1800 diesel sierras, the P100 1.8TD (sierra pickup truck) will have the same ratios as the transit, the car version has slightly differant ratios (better IMHO), "IF" you can find one ??

Thanks for explaining guys, I'll be sure to measure the length of the input shaft.

I got around to removing the gearbox last night, the tail section has a crack almost all the way around the outside housing. I was under the assumption I needed that part because these are different on car types with a hole on the top for the car specific gear lever.

Is it possible to just close the original gear lever part from the new gearbox and still fit it to the Transit (will the length and connection to the rear wheel axle be correct)? Hope this makes sense..

Yes, you can use a car tail section with the gearstick hole blanked. It will physically fit and work on the gearbox and I assume there will be clearance to the van body
