if it was mine I would show me on what limits they have failed it on.

Was a temporary tester whilst usual guy was on holiday so can't even ask that. b*stard!

When the temp tester has gone - take it back and ask the actual tester what needs to be done - he may well say nothing?

first easiest option as people are saying is pump full of grease. its easy and cheap and may well sort it out for the mot.

second easiest is probably find another axle with decent king pins. swap entire axle.

lastly is to change the king pins. realistically the hardest part potentially is getting them out. i have a 25ton press and couldn't get them to move with heat and swearing. should have just taken to someone with a mega press first and saved a lot of time and hassle as within 10 minutes they were out. follow the instructions and ream new ones in and re assemble. definitely wouldn't mess around trying to swing a hammer in the arch. just take it off.

I doubt there are many garages that could be bothered with doing this sort of job nowadays as there is far easier ways to earn money swapping parts and tapping at a keyboard. most probably dont have a big enough press if they are really stuck!!

Took to a new tester today and passed with two minor advisories - anti-roll bar bushes and minor corrosion on one sill.

When this used to happen to me, it always struck me that the age of the tester was an issue. The older ones had come across many sets of kingpins, and understood that they all have some play in them, (otherwise they would be seized up!). The younger testers were all more used to modern ball joints, which of course cannot have any play in them. At least, back in those older days, you could take it elsewhere for a test, without the tester seeing what it had failed on previously

Yeah - I at least want a tester that knows what a kingpin is! The guy who failed them called them swivel pins and was not that young (maybe 50's?). I just think he doesn't like old vehicles personally. Bit like Sadiq Khan! New tester was a bit older and had the last two MOTs.
