Mk5 lift pump how to disconnect hoses? Heat gun??

Postby 97transit2.5D » Fri Nov 10, 2023 4:03 am

Here is my lift pump

[attachment=0]20231110_145730.jpg[/attachment

Its got red and black connectors. How to take off to put in new lift pump? Without
Damaging the plastic.

Do you remove them first with pump attached to
Engine block??

Does anyone know o ring size???

Thks

They are quick fit couplings just push in the tags and they should just pull off .Never had to change the o rings but it must be 20 years since I’ve changed a transit lift pump

Push the pipes in towards the pump, push down the tabs and then pull the pipe off.

Ive tried to push the connectors forward there is no forward movement.

Is it a matter of squeezing down on the two tabs ...lock tabs top and bottom with channel locks and gently pulling them back?

this is plastic fuel pipe...in this next post below someone replaced the fuel pipe with 8mm fuel hose.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This post is exactly what is happening with my LIFT PUMP....leakage what a little vent/overflow hole on the lift pump.

it seems it is not a solved thing...appart from the obvious these pump have faulty parts in them

Ive replaced the lift pump with a delphi type from uk diesel injection pumps. No leaks

the push on squeeze off connectors i could not get off the faulty lift pump so i chopped out the plastic line section for INLET added
8mm continental fuel hose with double clamps on one side and single at the pump.
The outlet going to the diesel fliter I TOTALLY removed this plastic line and placed it with a nice section of 8mm continental fuel hose.
I left the plastic connector at the fuel filter and again connected the 8mm with double clips and single clip and lift pump outlet end.

No leaks works good. Made sure also no fuel line is touching the hot parts of the engine, so i clipped all lines away with cable ties. important.

I did similar with my mk3 but used a new filter head off a truck that was a spin on filter no mucking about with the clamp in the head

Hi,
as I have again problems with my mechanical injection pump conversion of my 97 2,5 TD I also checked the lift pump and I therefore know what you mean.
I also have had again a problem to get thiese "quick" ( ;-) ) connectors off, as I tried several of my lift pumps to make sure that`s there`s no problem ftom there.

And as I had the same problem as you have had I asked a friend to get these connectors off, which wasn`t absolutely not a problem for him, in seconds.
Next time it wasn`t a problem also for me, but then again......-and I also was thinkimg the same as you did, put a 8mm hose between pipe and pump.
You seem to have to get exactly the right pressure point so that the connection comes loose, then suddenly it pops and the next time it doesn't, crazy damned things.....

Btw: I never chenged the seals in there.

The problem with leaving these original push on connectors
Might be that the part leaks and does not come off.
I intentionally used longer pieces of 8mm hose. So they could
Be chopped off but after the genius idea of putting a little bit
Of silicon grease called saphire silivon, used by plumbers (no it wont contaminate your
Fuel and no wont attack hose rubber)

Not after undoing my clamps and a slight longitudinal pull on
Them in opposite direction of lift pump inlet outlet prongs the 8mm
Rubber ends come off like a dream.
What ever Ford was thinking with this plastic fuel lines where they
Connect to lift pump or diesel filter.
May 8mm continental hose was not available and expensive.
But thats my fix, and NO LEAKS!!!!! anywhere.

Ps delphi lift pump from diesel injectors uk not ebay

And yes re used plastic nipple end to diesel filer input but removed
Old Plastic Fuel hose and put in new 8mm continental between outlet
Lift pump (now new delphi ) and inlet diesel filter.

Make sure when routing any fuel hose that it DOES NOT
contact hot engine block or exhausts. Mine are all clear and
Cable tied. I HAVE NO LEAKS!!!!

Double stainless clips with hex fasteners
around each if possible .see picture

Note the lucas diesel fuel filter holder. Amazing design. Push in clamp up.
The one that came with my new engine from 1999 LDV is all
Plastic and budget.

Over the years I have developed such a dislike of push fit connections and rubbish derv filtre mounting system on mk 5's that today I, finally, changed fuel lines throughout for rubber fuel hose and jubilee clips on my current mk 5, also put a land rover 200 derv filtre mounting (fits mounting bolts perfectly) that has a screw type filtre.
Ironically it sounds like it's pulling in air now but I think that's down to jubilee clips being bit to big so they are wound to the max (bolt type). Now will change for smaller. Whatever the hassle it is getting it sorted has got to be better than dealing with air leaks every time a filter change is done or the fuels lines are touched.

You could also use the crimp type O clips .never been a fan of the mk3 filter if you don’t get it pushed up all the way it can let air are in I’ve had that before ended up taking it off the van and putting the full with fuel filter on top of a open vice and pushing the head down onto the filter.
