Rear axle type H oil capacity Ford transit Mk3 1990

Postby FedeMK3 » Wed May 22, 2024 11:26 am

Hello everyone, I have a question about the oil capacity of the differential of a type 34 (or H, it is the one without back cover identified with code B) axle single wheel for a 1990 transit mk3 van.
Recently, I broke my differential and I replaced it with an used one (the seller told me that all the oil was drained off).
After I left the van to a garage for change the axle, the mecanician said me that only 1.25 litres of oil was enough, however the manual said 2.7 litres.
I checked and the level is ok.
Do you have any explication about that? Maybe there was already oil inside the new piece? How many litres stays in yours?

Ok, so why in the manual is written 2.7l for code B?

If you have not had the hubs off and the half shafts out it will take less oil for just a oil change ,when I have the hubs off I always check the oil after a run as some oil is transferred into the hubs.

So basically is 2.7L when half shafts are off. So, because I checked the level after 100km and it is still ok, I suppose that there was already old oil in the hubs. Just I hope that the mechanician didn't put grease in the hubs..
So I suppose that I can drive without problems for the moment...

If the bearings are being replaced or washed out to inspect them it always pays to pack them with grease but not fill the void in between with grease
