Mk5, Heater blower fan not working?

Postby DakarVert » Wed Dec 31, 2014 8:35 pm

Have a '99 Mk5 (190EF)...

The blower fan is not working. The 3 heater control switches light up with ignition, They then go off when you either turn on the fan speed switch or turn on park lights?
Fuses are fine.

Cheers guys, No none of the speeds working.
Someone had wired in a single speed fan pull switch before I got it, But I removed it and fitted back in the proper switch and it worked fine up untill 2 days ago.

Where should it be earthed?

Try running a temporary earth to the fan motor plug. If it fixes it make it permanent !

Fuse box. On my RHD Transit, it's just above the accelerator pedal. Once you open it up there's a legend inside the lid, tells you which fuse is what. No relay for the fan, but there is a resistor for the lower speeds ...

It's a 30 amp fuse.

Speaking of which, mine keeps blowing the fuse if turned up full. It draws about 29 amps.
The blower motor came off a Mk6. Does the Mk6 use a higher rated motor, or do I just have a duff motor?

Hey all,

Know this is an old post but I thought Id add my two cents as I recently had a very similar problem. Blower motor fan not working at all, heater/AC controls lit up with the illumination feed but the lights on the controls turned off when I attempted to turn on the blower motor. I also had the engine bay cooling fan turn on when I turned on my headlights.

I attempted to run a new earth directly to the fan, however this made the fan only run on full speed and the AC on/off switch did not work.

Following the wiring back, there is a plug in the loom before the fan connector, not the plug that goes directly into the fan but if you follow the earth from the blower motor it will be the first plug you come across.

I found high resistance in this loom plug, only with the blower motor turned on. Bypassing this plug with some spade terminals completely fixed all electrical problems I was experiencing.

Hopefully this helps someone!
