LUCAS CAV PUMP LEAK (yes, another one !)

Postby simplyshaker » Tue Sep 15, 2009 9:22 pm

Hi everyone,

Got a bit of a leak coming from what looks like the gasket at the bottom of my fuel pump. The gasket between the pump body and the advance unit.
Is it possible to change this gasket without having to take the unit out of the van ? Can it be changed without having to re-set all the pump ? Is the gasket readily available ? Anyone done this before ?

I've looked through the forum for all other things related to this problem (and with the lucas pumps it IS a problem it seems !), just can't seem to find the right advice

Thanks,

Chris from France

Sorry, forgot to say its a 89 diesel (of course), SWB with a whopping 250 000 Km's on the clock

hi chris, it can be changed without resetting all the pump, but i would take the pump off and do it upside down in a vice, get some gasket paper and make your own gasket, easy enough job 2 bolts off and 2 bolts back on. :)

Thanks,

I've only just changed the timing belt as well, it would have been the perfect time to do this job too. I'll give that a go when I can give the van some time off the road.

Thanks for the help, chris

I really fancy having a go at changing the gasket on the advance unit WITHOUT taking the pump off the van (maybe just the alternator)

While its in this position, will anything fall out when taking the unit off ?
What the best way to unfasten the screw inside the bolt ? (The bolt head with a flat screw driver head inside it. Do I unfasten the screw head completely to release spring pressure* before unfastening the bolt head ? *If it has a spring behind)
Anything apart from the gasket needed ?
Anyone done this before ?

Or is it really not a good idea to do it in the van ? (because anything could happen with taking it out, and I need the van regularly)

Any help will be invaluable

I've seen a pump for sale on Ebay, from a 1990 model (mines an 89), is this compatible with mine ?

Or do I need to ask the type from the seller to be sure ?

I too am curious as to what this flat screwdriver slot is for? Is it to adjust the mixture when the pedal is floored? Since I removed the plunger housing from the bottom of the pump and replaced the little seal on the side, there is no more fuel drip from under the pump but mid and high range fuelling is terrible. Is the larger bolt with the screw slot for adjusting the midrange fuelling, and if so how do we go about it?

I've never worked on Lucas cav pumps, but this may be of help to you, this is for a turbo pump, but I wouldn't be surprised if yours isn't similar. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4l5on3_IrA.

The bit you're interested in starts at about 5.40.

Hi everyone, I wanted to share the resolution of the lower right leak (engine side) of the Lucas cav dps pump mounted on my 89 transit mk3 without dismantling the pump. Mine was leaking from the lower right side causing it to drip onto the left. After days of study I got to work: after removing the air filter, with a modified 13 wrench (filed at both ends) remove the right lever which pushes the piston in the lower part of the pump. Remove the piston (be careful when removing the piston two shims will come out), remove the spring, unscrew the black nut with a 27 wrench, replace the oil seal (16x10x4) and the O-ring and reassemble everything. It is not a simple operation, especially when reassembling. I helped myself with magnets, screwdrivers, grease inside the piston to avoid losing the shims and a lot of patience. After putting everything back together the leak disappeared. I had also asked a pump engineer for advice, reassuring me that the operation would not involve any calibration. The first images are downloaded to make it clear what to dismantle
