Which way do the valves go is the nearest the front, radiator number one?

Yes usually no 1 cylinder is the front of a inline engine and you count the valves as number 1 is the first if you are adjusting the tappits the di is a oddball you can’t use the 1 from 9 method meaning that if no1 is fully open you would adjust number 8 as it would be fully closed.if you do a search on hear or look in a Haynes manual for the di sequence.
