2.0L Pinto Carb conversion......

Postby harv » Fri Oct 18, 2013 2:38 pm

Hello
First post as a member.... iI have had a couple of diesel vans but now I have bought an old Transit Camper van (Auto Sleeper)
It has a 2.0L Pinto petrol engine in
The van has a genuine 55k on the clock and is very sound....except for the fuel feed!
A retired Ford mechanic had a quick look at it and basically told me to throw the carb away and fit a Weber

So...here is my question...what Weber carb should I fit...and where is the best place to get one?

Many thanks in anticipation of some sound advice!

PS. Its an 88 (F)

The usual replacement is a Weber 34 ICH, which comes as a kit. Be sure to refit the warm air pipe from the exhaust manifold to the air cleaner.

It stops carb icing. Google Weber dealers.

They were not a reliable carb, fitted to all ford cheap range, sporting models had Webber from factory.

Weber is fine if you can find a good one but there are a number of jets that can be modified to suit your engine. The accelerator cable setup is not great (depending on your model) i would consider replacing like with like or look for one thats already been modified to fit a van like yours. You will need a manifold to go with too :)

The usuall way is to just lob on TC weber from a car engine and they are fine, i used to run my Mk2 with a carb from a 2.0 cortina, swapped the manifold, carb, air filter and throttle cable over.
If you get a conversion single choke carb new it will come with an adapter plate to fit it on the VV manifold and one for the airfilter so you keep everything you already have, occasionly there is a S/H weber conversion on egay, they are cheap and easy to rebuild before fitting.

Thanks for the advice. I have rebuilt the vv carb and put a new inline filter after the pump for now but as the van is a keeper Im going to buy a new Weber....I think the previous owner must have had issues to as he gave me a spare vv carb with it....mind you he owned it for 22 years!
I will troll the net but anyone seen a cheap ,,,new,,,Weber?
I see the USA have them for $280 plus shipping so @ £240 delivered

By the way, the issue was either a gasket or possibly seal breaking up as main jet was blocked with black rubbery debris....I have replaced the fuel line after pump as well.

no doubt more questions later!

Can’t remember a Weber with 3 vacuum pipes but I remember some of the Fords had a vacuum pipe to the standard air filter to operate the hot air into the air filter in cold weather you could just link the two your not going to use with a peace of vacuum pipe
