Differential oil leak from the hub

Postby FedeMK3 » Mon Dec 23, 2024 12:12 pm

Dear Ford enthusiasts,
I have a Ford Transit MK3 1990 single-wheel. This summer, it had a differential oil leak from the left rear hub, with occasional oil drops forming. I had the hub opened, and the bearing was partially damaged. The bearing and seal were replaced with original parts. For a couple of months, the leak disappeared, but now with winter, the drop has started to reappear at the same spot. Any ideas?

It could be worn on the axle where the lip of the seal runs and not sealing correctly not sure on transits but on some axles you can replace what it runs on or you can get what is called a speed sleeve that goes over the worn part and has a larger seal we used them a lot at work .one thing that can happen is if the axle breather is blocked it can pressurise the axle and blow oil out of any weak seal it’s worth cleaning it out even if it doesn’t stop the leak completely,or it could be a badly fitted seal.

Are you seeing the leak on the inboard or outboard side of the wheel?
Poor sealing around halfshaft only real other possibility

Thank you guys for your answers.
I will check the axle breather,

I see the leak on the inboard side of the wheel.

Do you think that I have to open the hub another time?

If the halfshaft is dry then you will have to remove drum to investigate further.
This will also let you rule out brake fluid from a leaking wheel cylinder.
If it is the rear seal , then hub needs to come off again
