MK5 Petrol/ Preferd oil?

Postby Tragustauro » Fri Dec 20, 2024 11:00 pm

Hello everybody from a happy camper.

I am soon to change oil on my Mk5 95 petrol ford.

Any recommendations for the type of oil?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Merry holiday.

10W30

Note: the cam chains need changing at before 100,000 or they snap without warning...and one of the factors was oil grade

I've used all sorts over the years from 5W30 up to 15W40 without issue.

The cam chains don't break on their own without reason and the reason they break is failure of the tensioner, My Van has over 200k miles, neglected frequent oil changes and think the last time was about 8 or 9 years ago and only ever threw in what I had or could afford, I think the only reason I've been getting away with it is because mine runs on LPG.

5W30 was allways my preferd oil, never had a chain snap without warning, you'll hear it rattle way before any snapping goes on, had a few 8V twinks over the years, all well over 100K and the only chain i ever did was on a 40K mile sierra, mind you it was 40K without a single oil change

Thanks everybody..

Ok so anything from 5w30 to 15w40 should work?

I saw somewhere that the 5w30 was preferred for this old truck/van. Because of the oils thickness....Easier to start in winter time? Better for the engine to work with?

Snapping chains??

I assume if everything is running smooth nothing will snap and no chain just like that!?

The van only passed the 100000 km mark... and looks like new inside.

Thanks!
