Checking stop solenoid once removed

Postby Azbo » Thu Apr 24, 2025 6:10 pm

Can the stop solenoid be checked when off the vehicle? Have removed injection pump for refurb but now want to check stop solenoid. I've earthed the body of solenoid and given top 12v positive but can't see/hear anything. Does to PATS system have to be around it?
I love this site for the help it gives.

It has got the spring and plunger in hasn't it?
The plunger should be pulled in when connected like you did and the spring pushes it back out when disconnected.

Hi Chug,
Yes it's the spring and plunger type, no movement when given pos n neg connection. Would that be because it doesn't have all the PATS stuff around it?

When connecting one pole of a car battery to the solenoid body, no matter which one, and applying voltage from the second pole of the battery to the central contact, a soft click should be heard and when connecting and disconnecting this wire to the central contact, a small spark should be visible.

PATS only cuts the circuit to the solenoid, it should work if connected as said.

Thankyou everyone. The solenoid was faulty. Cheers for the advice.
