Advice on bearing condition

Postby meerkatmag » Mon Sep 29, 2025 5:26 pm

Hi all,
I pulled one of my big end bearing caps off to inspect it. I'm not sure if this is bad enough to warrant taking all the bearings out and replacing. Can someone give me advice on whether to bother or not?

Don't look to bad on my crappy monitor if those spots aren't holes, they look like water marks, but if you've got the sump off to get at that one why not check the rest anyway.

Those are pits not water marks. Its pretty smooth but you can feel those holes. Would you change them in that case? I have glyco bearings ready to go.

If they are below the surface thats fine, its just somewhere to hold extra oil.

That bearing looks absolutely fine to me - but if you have new ones that are good to go why not fit them?

I took piston out now, the new rings ive bought (goetze) had a compression rings that's too wide, it doesn't fit in the piston groove? Am I missing something? It has right part number for mk3 transit. Are there two sizes of rings?

My top compression ring groove is 2mm, but the supplied ring is 2.5mmm. The 2nd ring fits in the 1st compression ring groove. Presumably I can't mix and match them? Maybe I have pistons from a mk2 or something?

Is there a visible part number stamped in to piston so you can cross reference?

The pistons have this number on them: 864f-6110-a2a

Google doesn't have much on it. Ive put it back together now with the original top ring, it seemed in good condition.
