Ford Transit MK3 Campervan ECU/ ECM diagnostics

Postby Zeehenk » Mon Oct 27, 2025 2:07 pm

Hi everyone! first message on this board.... I hope you guys can help me out! Sorry about any grammar/ spelling mistakes. English is not my first language.

I have bought a Ford Transit MK3 Gasoline/ Petrol campervan last year. During our most recent trip, we experienced some problems that made us end our trip early. The problems are:

Misfires (seems that 1 spark plug is not firing consitantly)
Power loss
Stalled engine
Engine seems to be "looking" for the right fuel/ air mix

When cold starting the car it seems find, but when it warms up, the trouble begins. It's hard to drive it even for a few meters without the engine stalling.

Changed in January of this year:
Spark plugs
Spark plug cables
Power distributor cap (if that's the name :))
Power rotor
Valve cover gasket
Air Filter
Oil filter

On the list to exchange:
Bobine ("coil")
Temp. sensor
Fuel filter
Car battery

I'm currently looking for a way to read the diagnostics from the ECU/ ECM, but I can't seem to find the location of the plug to plug in a diagnostics tool. I am aware that the system is likely a "blinking system" and I might not be able to use a computer to get any reading- although I hope that you might have a way to do this!

Attached you'll find a picture of the barcode of the ECM/ ECU, a picture of the serial plate of the car and a picture of 2 mysterious cables that seem to be attached to the ECU/ ECM.

Does anyone have any Idea how to read the ECM/ ECU? And how can I (if needed) reset this system?

Thanks everyone!

P.s. If anyone has some tips on how to bur less fuel with this van, let me know! Currently at 1 liter for 6,5 km :')

Check the multi plug for the injectors on the loom, had a few misfires on the car version of that engine (i assume it is the 8V twincam), loose or coroded pins, a noid light will show up any inconsistant signals to the injectors ? basicly an LED test light you plug into the injector plug.
Those plugs i think (been a while) the 3 pin is for adjusting the timing for low octane fuel ? it retards the ign and raises the idle depending on which wire is earthed ? as i say it's been couple of decades since i worked on a EECiV managed vehical :?

92VB ECU says its a mk4 not a mk3.

Those 2 connectors you have shown are for the diagnostics.

The sykes pickavant ACR (with the correct module and lead) will read it, there are other cheaper options too but I can't remember what they are

Thanks! I'll start searching for the tool. If anyone has another idea to read it, please let me know!

Also; could it be possible this is an MK4/ MK3 combination or something? Based on your reply about the ECU, it's n MK4. If I look at pictures of the car it also looks more like an MK4 than an MK3, but based on the type plate in the car it's a 66kW model, which only seems to be availible as an MK3 petrol model. Frankenstein van....?

Ok, thanks! Is there any way to read the computer without using the suggested tool? I'm having trouble locating one for a decent price...

Also: would you know how to reset the computer when needed?

I've had ignition coils cause the same problem, ran fine until warmed up, try swapping the coil (bobine) they are not expensive.

Short update for whowever is interrested:

We still; didn't read the diagnostics of the computer. but the van is running well again!
Among other things we've changed the coil and a temperature sensor and checked all the cabels. Found some (almost) molten wires and some shortend cables. Replaced everything and all is well again.

If I can manage to get a diagnostics tool for cheap, I'll try to grab that as well.
