What type of master cylinder / servo do I have

Hello Oh-Wise-Ones,

My sister-in-law recently bought an X reg Motorhome built on a Transit base. The servo is wheezing and the brake pedal goes down so I want to change the servo and master cylinder. The guy she bought it off supplied replacements for both, but the master he supplied only has two pipes where the motorhome has 3. Can anyone point me towards the correct part to buy off ebay please (New ideally).

From looking online I can see that the 2 pipe version is being offered for the X reg Transits, so I assume that's just a different brake set up. Does anyone know if the servo's are all the same as it'll mean I can use the one he supplied?

Well if you go here .. it shows a diagram .. the diagram isn't right for yours as it does not show more than 2 pipes.......its generic..but links off it will get you there

Pressing on number 6 in the picture scrolls it down ..
Then you have 4 choices of master cylinder
The above 4 choices are divided into: countries, 4 wheel drive and non antilock brakes

NOTE: you cant copy the part number until you press on it and it links into the next page

Looking at ebay with those part numbers shows at least one with the extra pipe (Not going to lead you to it because .. i don't want to be responsible for a wrong purchase)

Ok, so I've got it down to either 7143733 which is with ABS and 7034902 which is without. Interestingly, both are listed for Transits up to 1997 and ours is a 2000 model, but as its an Autosleeper there might have been some sort of arrangement to buy older chassis for the conversion process.

Looking online I can see that the reservoir on 7143733 is an exact match, but I can't find an example of the reservoir fitted to 7034902 to compare. As you'd expect, 7143733 is the more expensive one !!

Is there a quick way I can see if the van has ABS or not by looking under the bonnet ?

There will be this lump the size of a bag of sugar .. either low down on the bulkhead .. or against the inner wheel arch

ive been searching for pics that would give you a view of it, that you would see from the top.. this is a mk6, but i think the same

you'll see maybe 6 brake pipes coming out of it on yours

also when you turn the ignition on, should be a orange or yellow symbol on the dash before you start engine, that says ABS

when you buy a new master cylinder, it is usual to have no reservoir with it

DO NOT BUY A USED MASTER CYLINDER

what i'm seeing on ebay

7034902 from £32.50 upwards - 60 results
7143733 all i can find is used, all from spain !

note part number is the same through out all car and vans for that model of master cylinder .. for instance yours may also fit a fiesta , focus, mondeo etc

you best find out the date of manufacture of the chassis to get the best answers for your questions

may be something like this:

chassis manufactured December 1998.. exported to italian motorhome builder .. another 6 months rolls by , ..is completed and exported and sits on forecourt for 9 months before it sells. and gets registered as 2000

Hi and thank you for your ongoing help.

I've had a good look at the van this evening and its definitely not got ABS. There's no light on the dashboard and the three brakepipes just run off under the bulkhead, definitely not to an ABS unit.

So, that changes things for the best I think and I'm now looking at being 7034902. That looks the same (Although I'd like to find the dimensions somewhere to confirm) and its only £35 or so new so worth a punt. The bit that confused me is when I looked at the 7143733 from Spain as you did Mark, the reservoir design matched mine and thats the only one I've seen with that design.
Still, who knows what changes have happened in the last 25 years its been on the road.

Your master cylinder has a part number for a MK4 Transit so it may have been swapped already for an earlier one & it's not original to your van, you probably only need a new seal between the servo & master cylinder if it is wheezing & loosing vacuum . I will see what I have in stock.
