Rear hub seal and large halfshaft seal Nightmare

Postby savi18 » Tue Jan 20, 2026 6:16 am

Found my offside rear hub leaking oil after inspecting the rear brakes, reading threw the Haynes Manual for this 1997 mk5 Transit bus with single wheel 14'', its states 2 1/2 inch socket which is 57.15 mm for the socket, the nut is a double hexagon nut, other sites I've been on sites mentions it 65mm socket, i think its a H axle. please tell me what size socket as don't want to go and buy wrong socket,
Could someone point me in the right direction to locate and buy the hub seal and also the very large thin seal that's fits on the Half shaft where it rest against the hub when refitting the shaft, spent ages looking for information but very conflicting information. Vin No SFAEXXBDVEVJ31353 if its helps, Cheers savi18, ps: i live in NZ now so parts here are non existent.

The hub nut is 56mm bi hex on (pre 2000) transits with 5 stud wheels (as yours is).

Its 65mm bi hex for 6 stud wheels (single and twin)

With regards to the seal between half shaft and flange, there is an O ring there... part no is 1402712 and it sometimes comes in a wheel bearing kit.
