LEAF SPRING BUSH MK4 CHASSIS CAB

Postby gwynfe » Tue Jun 16, 2026 11:30 am

Could someone please point me in the right direction as to where I can get a bush for the rear eye of the leaf spring on my Mk4 chasis cab?
I have purchased the front ones no problem (92VB-5719-AA 48mm x 85mm) the rear eye is much larger probably 57mm x 85mm.
i did struggle to find the bush for the shackle/hanger in the end i bought new hangers (£25)
i would rather not get new leaf springs as the old ones are good just the bushes have perished.
many thanks in advance.

If I remember correctly you may need a press to push them out and new ones back in. I may have some old ones still in the spring, but I don’t have a press. I’ll look tomorrow.

I have a lot of new bushes, what is the ID or bolt diameter as there are several different sizes?

Just had a look of what I still have, not in good shape, not even sure if it’s from a transit. Outer diameter of larger end is 38mm. Internal diameter of bushing 18mm. Probably not worth the trouble. Unfortunately I probably got rid of the springs I had a few years ago.

If the old bush is knackered the centre will knock out with a hammer then chisel outer shell out and hammer in new bush with lube, A press is the better option

Ah thanks for the replies,
I finally found the right bush
Transit 2.5 Mk 4 / 5 D Di Tdi Rear Leaf Spring Rear Bush 1991-2000 17-418 1812966 on ebay
Yes getting the old bushes out was not too bad.
I burnt the rubber out with a blow torch and then knocked out the shell (outer) with a chisel.
I will use a press to fit the new ones
Problem I have now, is on checking the front bushes (front eye of leaf spring) they are too long and will prevent the spring fitting in the spring mounting.
(definitely the right part 92VB5719AA listed)
oh well looks like I will have to grind them down to make them fit.

DOH! ignore the last post about grinding the bushes down.
I feel a right idiot... had the leaf spring the wrong way round!
Anyway I suppose we should learn from our mistakes although it is
probably better to learn from others.

Note: this (that's all the bushings and hangers) work on in metalastic principles .. meaning the movement is taken up by the rubber twisting going along smooth roads, and shocks are taken by the pins twisting, so like 90 percent of the time its the rubber twisting.
all sorts of schools of thought on this .. and i reckon greasing is not to be carried out as then the pin would be twisting 100 percent of the time and wearing the pins out. the factory manuals .. no mention of greasing and they are dry from the ford factory.

assemble loosely ... and torque once on its wheels

all the best mark
