mark 5 van spare tyre removal tool

Hi, does anyone have the spare tyre removal tool for a 1999 mark 5 swb transit and could you post a pic please. Ours is missing and we're struggling to find one online so thinking an image search might help. Its apparently not the standard earlier or later tool, this one has an 8 sided end?

It should be the jack handle on the jack you push it in and there’s a clip that holds in jack so it doesn’t pull out the funny shape off the end is so it works at any angle

Have two types. You mean the spare tyre tool to turn the winch that lowers the spare tyre from under the backside?

I don’t remember it having eight sides. I believe four sides. I’ll check, and post a picture. But I’m in Italy.

Yes thats what I mean thanks. Ours definitely has 8 sides at the end though. I think there are square ones but they dont fit the 1999 model for some unknown reason

btw never realised earlier 91 - 94 they had a proper kit .. link 2 - i thought only fordson tractors had these ?

Hi @smileyflo and all First post on this forum. I am also looking for the same tool for my 1997 LWB ! Our van came without a jack or other tools, not surprising for its age but we didn't think this would be such a big problem as it is turning out to be. I too have tried the version sold by TPUK with the four sided knob but no joy.

I am pretty sure that the nut in the winding mechanism is eight sided as @smileyflo says. I estimate it's about 15mm or 16mm AF. Hopefully I'll be able to attach pics. To make it even more interesting, the spare on this LWB van is on the nearside, not at the rear. I am having trouble finding any way to get this spare off, can't even find a suitable size octagonal socket that I could use with an extender to bodge something up.

good luck with that .. all sockets are six sided or some twelve sided, don't think any will fit.

i could make that if i had the thing dismantled .. put in in a vice , you would put a tube around the head .. and wack it with hammer until it takes the form of the head.

Maybe the faster solution is to remove it and replace it with a more common winch from an older van if it comes complete with lever and jack and replace this abomination. Bring an angle grinder to the junkyard because it may be a bitch to remove the torx bolts.

I'll have to check,but I think I hammered a 1/2" drive 19/32AF socket on mine and use a ratchet to raise/lower it.

Thanks Yep of course eight into twelve won't go ! It looks as if the nut possibly has four flat sides and four slightly dished inwards, like a square with curved arcs cut off the corners rather than a simple octagon. Can't even get any sort of spanner round it either because it seems to be recessed behind a metal rim (visible in my pic behind the wobbly plastic guide shroud).

Background is that we are trying to get the spare down to enable some welding of the floor above (long story in itself ...) But in a bit of a catch-22 as can't easily access the winder above the spare, but can't remove spare to access it. I may make a separate posting about the original issue, but am still keen to be able to sort the spare wheel removal as per this thread.
