MK5 Transit 2.5 Turbo Diesel Water Pump

Today I decided to replace the water pump with a new one. Not sure if was necessary but since I already have a new one and general advice is to go ahead and change it while the timing belt is off.

The old paper gasket was baked onto the engine side and would not scrape of easily. Heating up with a pipe lighter helped it scrape off easily. Absolutely do not use a steel brush as tempting as it maybe, it will scour grooved onto the aluminum.

That fan clutch , looks well passed its best .. get that replaced while you are there .
There is a special tungsten tipped tool for the gasket scrapping .. its all about getting the right angle so you do not gouge the aluminium ..

never seen anyone use a lighter .. seems to have worked so all is good

I wasn’t able to get the fan clutch off. The difficult to reach nut behind is seized. I Assume it’s a right-handed thread. Was wondering why do you think it should be changed, excessive axel free play? It’s probably never been changed in over 300k km.

Mostly they are left handed .. and have be cracked loose with a chisel

Some times they do this to the nut to show its left handed - see the little gouges on the apex of the hexagon

Thanks for correcting that, would be a mess if I forced it the wrong way! Gets confusing at times, little changes between models and years and what we thought we know no longer applies! Just sent you a PM.

The nut on the heat-shrink coupling has a right-hand thread.
It's usually impossible to unscrew it after years of use. In such cases, I cut the coupling with a grinder and a thin cutting disc and trim off one edge of the nut. If this slightly damages the threads, it doesn't matter.
After trimming off the edge of the nut, it comes off without any problem.

Best to remove it with the fan belt on (tensioned). I used to use a steel bar, strike with a hammer soon moves. Turbo hubs were prone to exiting through the radiator so best to check condition
Nice job on the waterpump We used to try and get them off hot and normally the gasket would stick to the pump

Thanks for the tips. Unfortunately couldn’t warm the engine. Still busy installing the Otosan pump ( Bosch clone).

There is a little wiggle on the fan clutch. There’s 300k km on the engine. Probably needs to be changed. Does it have replaceable bearings? Or must I order a new one?

not repairable .. only replaceable

careful with choice, only go for well know brand names
