I am going to rip the sticker off. I can't imagine a 1995 Transit being able to meet that level.
The minus 1 is metres to the power of -1. It can also be written as 1/m. It is a measurement of opacity - that means how much soot is blocking a beam of light through the exhaust smoke. I'm not sure of the detail but that's basically what it means.
yes i know what the minus 1 is supposed to mean .. but not in this context
yes the link takes you to google
below that link in that post is the
search words to use
ford transit "0.98" emissions sticker i done it that way because ...; was getting broken link when i posted it, as google reproduces the colons in the search as plus 2 % percent or something like that .. that wiil not work here
This is what you get if you put those search words in
On a Ford Transit, the "0.98" on the vehicle's manufacturing plate or sticker refers to the manufacturer-specified smoke coefficient (opacity value) for the engine.
Here is exactly what this means for your vehicle and its MOT test:
What the 0.98 Value Means
• Engine Opacity Limit: The number 0.98 represents the smoke density limit (in m⁻¹) determined when the vehicle was type-approved.
• MOT Testing Threshold: During a UK MOT test, if a diesel vehicle has an official manufacturer plate value displayed on its vehicle VIN plate or an engine bay sticker, the MOT tester must use that specific value as the legal limit for the diesel smoke test—rather than the standard default limits.
Why It Matters
For older Euro 4 or Euro 5 Transits, standard default MOT smoke limits might be higher (such as 1.5 m⁻¹). However, because Ford specified 0.98 on your vehicle's plate, your Transit is legally required to achieve a cleaner smoke reading of 0.98 m⁻¹ or lower to pass the MOT diesel emissions test.
Where to Find It
This number is usually found in a small box in the corner of the VIN plate (located either on the door jamb or under the bonnet) or on a dedicated emissions control sticker inside the engine compartment.
If your Transit is failing an MOT because its emissions are hovering between 1.0 and 1.5, this specific "0.98" plate value is the reason the tester is failing it.
Big tip coming up from me During the test the mot examiner increases revs to the max aloud
AI
During a UK MOT test, a diesel engine is revved to maximum engine revolutions (revs) or the rev limiter to check that the governor works properly and to measure exhaust smoke opacity
ME
What this does, you've been driving stop start .. small journeys etc .. during the past year, soot will accumulate in the exhaust system and adhere to the insides of it.. mot tester does so above .. loosens it all and the results will look like smoke... when really its crap off the inside of the exhaust. the instruments see it as smoke .. the mot tester sees it as as smoke they are fooled,, even brown rust dust will be interoperated as (particulate) Smoke, YOUR CAR FAILS
What you should do the day before mot... find a wide road up long steady hill where you can give the van maximum acceleration and maximum throughput through the exhaust...... clear all that crap out before it gets cleared in the mot and causes failure.
all the best.mark
