VALVE TIMING 2 litre petrol dohc motor - 8 valve

Postby vyxxn » Wed Dec 14, 2005 9:00 pm

Any help here would be appreciated. I changed the head gasket and by the time i got to rebuilding it I am not sure if the timing chain has moved on the crank sprocket, so I lined everything up ( crank and cams ) and hooked the chain around keeping the main run up from the crank taut ( the right hand run when standing in front of the engine. ) The van starts fine but after a few seconds of tickover it splutters and dies. Also top whack is now only 45 mph. Anyone know a surefire way of setting the timing

cheers

marc

The chain and sprockets were set using copper links on the chain and dots on the sprockets.
It doesn't normally come off the crank sprocket as there isn't much room down there. I'd have also thought that the engine wouldn't have run at all if that far out of time due to piston/valve contact or mis syncronised injection sequence because of the difference between the Crank position sensor and the Camshaft position sensor as the revs went above 600rpm.

The CMP sensor is only looked at once, once the speed reaches 600rpm it's signal is discarded by EEC V. No CMP signal at all will result in all injectors firing at the same time as it will be unable to determin the firing sequence.

You could check the timing again by removing the lower plate and the front plate with the coil packs on. I'd also check all the multiplugs and vac lines on the inlet manifold.

sorry to waffle on.

Thanks for the replies. The diagram should help. There are no copper links on my camchain. I looked for them when pulling it apart so maybe it has had a new chain fitted sometime. looks like i will have to get at the crank sprocket and go off the diagram

cheers
