AIR STARVATION ON A Mk 3 Di

Postby john leeman » Sat Feb 11, 2006 9:56 pm

ONE OF THE MOST STRANGEST THINGS HAPPENED TO ME RECENTLY DRIVING MY LUTON F Reg MK3 DRIVING BACK FROM SCOTLAND, GETTING SLOWER & SLOWER UP HILLS EMPTY. JUST PUT IT DOWN TO THE ENGINE BEING NACKERED, AND HAVIND TO CHANGE IT SOONER RATHER THAN LATER. ON GETTING BACK TO BASE IN GRIMSBY. THAN A SCREECHING NOISE ON ANTHING BUT TICK OVER, I LOOKED ALL OVER THE ENGINE TRIED EVERTHING. SO TOOK IT TO A FRIEND OF MINE AT MY LOCAL FORD DEALERS, CAMSHAFT NO. WATER PUMP NO, ALTENATOR NO. ONLY THEN TOUCHED THE AIR FILTER HOUSING DID IT STOP. THE LONG TRUMPET PIECE OUT OF THE AIR FILTER ROUND BODY. WAS RUBBING TOGETHER MAKING A HIGH PITCH SCREECHING SOUND, ALSO THIS PIECE HAD FOLDED FLAT RESTRICTING THE AIR GOING INTO THE ENGINE. A QUICK CALL TO THE LOCAL SCRAPPIE, WHAT A DIFFERENCE, BACK TO ITS OLD SELF AGAIN. ie FASTER, YOU NEVER KNOW WHATS NEXT, GOOD FUN THOUGH.
35 years of driving, repairing, sleeping in transit's lovin every minute.

it used to be common to see an old Di with a roll of insulation tape and ½ cable ties wrapped round the inlet tube of the air cleaner box
to help cut down the noises from it, if it wasn't that it was the securing bolts coming loose and wearing their threads away.
