Rear Light help please

Hello All,

I have an old D reg Transit & need to replace a rear light as someone smashed it for me during the night (Grrr).

I got a replacement 1986-200 light, but it's a bit different to the one on my van.

Basically, the old one has all the electrical connections built in so that one plug connector wires all the lights.

The replacement I got doesn't have this arrangement, and looks like each bulb holder has to be wired individually. This means I would need to get new bulb holders & extend all of the wires which seems like a pain.

I just wondered if any one had come across this before or knows a quick fix?

Is there some kind of conversion kit I can buy? How easy would it be to remove the clear plastic lens & just replace that part?

Welcome Steve. I can't work out how one light can cover 86-2000, there were quite a few changes between these years. Is it a pattern part or 2nd hand? Early Mk3s are generally thought of as running between 86-91.

fred the rear lights are the same lense its just the connection to it thats different!

steveStrat - ive never seen one without a block connection - is this an aftermarket non-ford one

sounds to me like you have the lens but not the bulb holder block(s) that contain the electrical connection block(s)

does that make any sense ?

early ones have seperate bulb holders up until about 1990 when they go over to a one piece affair - all the lamps interchange OK but if you're going from one piece to the seperate type you'll have to get all the bulb holders for it - multiplugs are all the same

just take it back and get one the same as yours - much less hassle

Yes it's a new one I got off e-bay (that's prolly the prob!)

Returning it is a pain also.

The old one has metal conducting strips that connects all the bulbholder sockets to a single connector for all the wires.

This new one I got just has sockets.

Do you think it's possible to remove the lens & attach it to the old lamp?

I see now - you've got the newer style lamp - go to a breaker or a ford agent and get the holder that matches the lamp and your troubles will be over

if you try to change the lenses over chances are you'll scrap both lamps

if you do have a go, do it by destroying the new rear part and the old lense - like removing an old body panel - if you get my drift! rather than trying to prise the 2 apart!!!

just source a one piece bulb holder for any Trany 1990 onwards and it will plug strait into your loom no more problems much better than the old seperate bulb jobs
