1988 battery

iam due to pick up a 1988 transit but it needs a new battery can anyone tell me what battery terminals it has, round or square? 2.5 diesel luton

Daft as it sounds - just start it using a start pack - it should then run itself of it's alternator, at least to get to a garage and the purchase of a new battery (unless you can phone where the van is, and ask?).

I'm pretty sure it won't run without a battery as the alternator needs 12v on the coils to make it work in the first place.

Battery may be the same as my old MK4 which was an 097

The battery you need is an 097 or alternativly 093 which are square terminal.

A 2.5 Di will run without a battery connected. It only uses the battery for starting essentially. After that it is pretty much self-sufficient until you overload the circuit with ancilliaries.

That was my understanding as well, although obviously you would want to leave the "dead" battery connected, if nothing else other than stopping the terminals shorting out.

well unless you have one very good starter pack in this wether i cant see it starting ,mind you it is the erly engine if its a 1988 so it probly will start!

That may be true for an old technology diesel, but the more modern ones, including the Di, need 12v to hold open the stop solenoid at least. Without a battery connected the alternator won't produce anything.
If you charge up the dead battery, it may be just enough to make the alternator produce a charge, even if it won't start the engine.

I've just had mine running this afternnon with the battery disconnected

once you jump start the van the field windings in the altenator will excite after that the altenator will produce enough to keep the windings energised thus running the vehicle.

These alternators must be powered differently to some others then I tried this with an old diesel I had years ago, because I thought it should run with the stone dead battery still fitted................ and it wouldn't

Mine's a Bosch 55A job with the vac pump on the back.

Looking for a 90A/100A as we speak. The words sh*t and rocking horse are valid
