The thing at the bottom with the little gaitor on it.

at the top above starter motor seems like a long thing with a wire coming out the back of it and then a plunger type thign you push in at the front of it.

as someone had by passed the imboilser before i got this van, the connection plug that runs, alternator, oil pressure switch?, fuel pump and another few bits can you by this as a new loom? would like to wire it all back up into the imboilser etc.

dunno if this is possible / cheap enough to do?

looks like the old type pump with cold start mate,im a bit puzzled ...but ill assume youve had at least an early injector pump or engine put in?so i wouldnt imagine your van was loomed for this set-up.as someone mentioned later d.i dont have it,but i retro fitted the flamestart type setup from various bits n bobs on my current 97 van,1 battery, small starter, few secs on cold start button...woo shes away without fail.i would guess and say check your coolant switch on thermosat housing...because im almost sure it senses coolant temp then energizes that connection on side of injection pump.

ok looked again, see the arm that unit moves...on side of pump.move the arm the opposite way to where it is at moment...push it by hand on a really cold day and crank it...it should fire immediately ...

if you try and your happy its starting better,id probably just wire a push switch on dash.

........sorry matt, but there is no way the thick oil will stop a good battery and starting motor from getting a di from starting,

"Good 'charged' battery" and "good starter motor" don't always go hand in hand, more likely half charged 6yr old battery and same age starter!

As for the oil, my Di struggled to start during the first frost 2 weeks ago, like, rurr, rurr, rurr, rurr, rurr, rurr, rurr, rurr. Changed the 3000 mls old oil for fully synthetic, Rock Oil Strata, same temp this week end, two turns and it was away.
Speak as you find, changing the oil does help a great deal.
