EGR Systems, how many have removed them

I notice in the self build camper van club I am a member of that most folks with smiley trannies have disconnected the EGR systems and have noticed a modest improvement in their engines capabilities, how many folks on this site have done the same ??

Ive done away with the lot took of bananas ,made a thick steel blanking plate to blank of exhaust manifold,fitted a lucas cav inlet manifold and round air filter,done away with the black oblong airbox,made a bracket to hold power steering res on. she purrs like a kitten . the bananas where choked up,threw them in tat, weigh them in later when theres a good pile best wishes Billy

Couldn't your bananas be used to convert a non banana 70PS to a 76PS

Dont think they would make an ounce of diffrence, more likely to go the otherway , the hightop runs much better since i took them off ,if anyone wants them there welcome . i see it has the old di works by drawing air in,compressing it ,add a fine squirt of diesel mist ,bingo off we go, so the more air i can get in there the better , and the bananas just choke up, hence , fuel not burnt properly,excessive exhaust,poor performance, i have taken them off for customers, steam cleaned them and put them back on,but my personal pref is to do away with them .. best wishes Billy

Aint got round to doing mine yet but fully intend to.

After buying my first mkV I was shocked while comparing engines with my mates mkV...that was when I first noticed no bananas, no egr, no oblong filter box. I thought someone had stuck an ole mk3 engine in it but after reading about billy's mods perhaps the previous owner had already carried them mods out.
Anyhow she's long gone now and my current van has done at least the 145,000 miles she shows on clock, she hates hills and more often than not struggles up em at 30mph and I hate getting overtook on them by LDV's and ole Renaults so probably will do mine soon just worried about increased fuel consuption.

Rifleman... disconnecting the EGR is all well and good if you leave it all connected I think this is why...when the engine is cold the exhaust gasses are recirculated through the inlet to warm the inlet gasses up and speed the engine warm up process as well as cutting down on exhaust emissions??....diesels dont like running cold as it inhibits good fuel explosion. On short journeys this is fine as it helps short distance mpg..0n the other hand it does nothing for power as warmer inlet gasses take up more room than cold inlet gasses, therefore the ideal mix would be warm exhaust gas recirculation while cold but when the engine gets hot this should be bypassed for an intercooler to cool the inlet gasses giving more power as cooler inlet gasses take up less room than warm inlet gasses for the same density. I'm trying to make sense but failing I think

I have removed the throttle mechanism, linkages, vacuum pipes( blocked off with number plate screws), butterfly etc and fitted a blanking gasket atop of the feed pipe to exhaust manifold, it has indeed worked well, but what is this talk about Air boxes and Bannanas ?? what have you done oer changed and why , Any pictures please ??

Boxes refer to the type of airfilter BOX - I think - and bananas refer to the type of inlet manifold due to its resemblance to a well known yellow curved fruit
