bonnet wont open and van sounds like a tractor

Postby darren73 » Wed Jan 20, 2010 1:58 am

hi,i have a 1998 hicube with 200k,t i was driving earlier when all of a sudden it got really noisy-it sounds like a tractor,i hope its something to do with the exhaust but i cant get the bonnet open, the lever wont work and the bonnet is sitting up about 3 inches but wont open,i was wondering can i force it open and if so what damage will it cause,or is there an easier way-i am not very mechanically minded.please help as i need it asap for work-thanks

If the bonnets sitting up about 3 inches then the lever inside the cab has worked, you now need to lift the bonnet slightly, put your hand under it near the centre where you will find another leaver and the bonnet should open.

The tractor sound could be the flexy bit under the gearbox. I've had three fail, you can patch it with tinplate and jubbly clips but replacement is the best. The bonnet will always close as long as the locking pin and spring are OK. You can always take the closer/slam panel off to sort it out 'tho' the bolts into the front crossmember may be a pig.

As above ^ exhaust usually breaks on flexi or just after where frontpipe meets rest of exhaust, have a look underneath at drivers side, near rear edge of drivers door

and get someone to put their hand over exhaust when looking to help locate if it is blowing.

with bonnet up a few inches, look to the right hand side of latch and theres a part that needs to be pulled to release bonnet, but make sure bonnet is resting at same time not pulled.
