EGR/Fuel mod... what can i expect?

Postby dcurzon » Wed Jun 14, 2006 9:53 am

I've just been out and done the mod exactly as described in the thread in 'technical how to' section http://www.fordtransit.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3968

i turned the fuel pump hex exactly one turn

What sort of improvements can i realistically expect from having done this mod??

My next trip in the van will be down to deepest, darkest south wales, towing a caravan - so around 230 miles each way.

Its a Mk5 SWB transit 100 (what do the numbers indicate anyway? transit 80/100 etc?)

thanks

A little more pulling power at the cost of slightly worse mpg...depending on how tight the bearing is in your right ankle :)

Went to Pembrey [from Leicester area] weekend before last for a weekends historic racing...a nice mix of motorway and A road driving gave me an mpg in the high 20's [16gls @ 460 mls], MK5 SWB '80' towing a caravan. You should be expecting about the same :D

I have to add though I use the gearbox quite a bit relying on the torque of the engine to move us along rather than rpm...high rpm is unavoidable going uphill I know but theres no need for high rpm in any gear on the flat if you want reasonable mpg....but you need to keep up with modern day traffic I hear you say...accelerate at the same speed as a big rig and wheres the complaint? Vans towing caravans get a bad press anyway...everyone thinks you're a gypo

All to do with the legal carrying capacity..mine is an '80' and carries 800KGs...a '100' carries 1000KGs, '120' carries 1200KGs etc etc..

Errrmm...not really as sidecars are my thing [me being the passenger] but heard it said that keeping out wide for the second part of the left hander [squaring the corner off by drifting to the right] works but gives someone the opportunity to dive up the inside :(

Turn 1 is the hairpin immediately at the end of the start finish line - potential here for carnage at the start of the race -

Turn 2 mild righthander leading into the lefthanders - brilliant corner for hanging out on the chair -

Turns 3/4 the lefthanders - many different ways to get round this one but find on an outfit hanging wide right after the first part works

Turn 5 mild right - rightside of the tyre will be coldish . . be careful on the throttle as it might spit you off

Turn 6 tight right leading onto the back straight is tighter than it looks but influences your speed onto the back straightaway

Turn 7 a right kink in the middle of the straight ...should be flat out here

Turn 8 90* righthander onto the start finish straight - you can go into this quite fast as there is loads of run off coming out the other side....

Dont fall off :( as this leads to a slow laptime andhurts when you wake up in the morning.

This is by no means the defintive way to ride this cicuit...this is my perspective as a sidecar passenger and former solo rider...

Sorry guys for taking up a little too much page space....
