Smoke/carbon

Postby Aleka » Wed Jun 14, 2006 1:15 pm

Hi guys
Could do with some advice again.
My 1986 transist 2.0 petrol was parked up on drive and I thought I'd start it up to keep it ticking over. It fired up beautifully no probs there.

UNTIL

I go to work in my car which was parked behind the van and notice black carbon on the front of my car.
Bear in mind van had been stood for 8 months when I bought it, and I haven't had the service done (being done this weekend). What else could be wrong with it? Is it a dirty carb/fuel?? Or should a service clear it up?

Also when I took it for a run at first no problems ran well after ten minutes when everything had had time to slosh about it started to choke at junctions was easy enough to keep it running with a bit of throttle. Could this be related?
My mate says it just needs a bl***y good service!
Any ideas?

Thanks guys!

Your mate is probably right :) dont worry too much though as the soot on the front of your car will have been the result of a few years of carbon build up in the exhaust system which then was blown out onto your car when you started and revved the engine of the van  Stack a piece of cardboard or something disposable at the back of the exhaust outlet next time you run the engine....

Thanks for that.
Will keep my fingers crossed that the service will do the job.
I also still have a dodgy speedo but I can't locate the cable to see if its loose or twisted! Anybody be able to tell me where I should be looking?

Cant forsee any probs with that, if you stand close enough to any carburetted car when it first starts up you will get sooty

The engine wanting to die on you at junctions etc is almost certainly the choke sticking slightly, a service should sort that so long as the person that does it cleans the carb while they are at it :D

Make sure they do EVERYTHING on the engine service as its been stood so long... Oil/Filter, air filter, fuel filter if you have one, spark plugs, dizzy cap and rotor arm, clean the carb, clean out the breather and oil filler cap gauze, check antifreeze and brake fluid, grease hinges and bonnet catch/cable etc etc etc...

Its sitting on top of the distributor, all the plug leads go into it, and the coil lead...
