Knowing that I've only just about been passing the last two MOTs on the smoke test,

I decided this year to change the EGR valve which is one of the electronic variety on my TDI Auto.
Well it's now the smokiest it's ever been
I asked the garage if they could plug their diagnostic gadget in so as to establish if the new EGR valve was faulty before they MOT the van. (I still have the old one. It stands me in £30 as they're on an exchange basis)
He didn't seem interested and said lets MOT it first and see
Well

it passed with flying colours "this van is running cleaner than most petrol vehicles, and has the best results by far than any other diesel I've tested"
My question is

What's it all about

How can you have more smoke in ordinary driving and yet under test conditions it's more than perfect
