heater resistor 2.5di 97

Postby clarkster » Sat Feb 06, 2010 12:34 am

got the usual blower only working on speed 3 problem so i obtained a resistor off another 2.5di breaker today.
before bothering to mount it permanently i just unplugged the still in-situ knacked one and plugged the loom onto the fresh one and left it to hang down. tried the fan no joy. now do the these resistors need to be earthed to the body or should it work the fan on speeds 1 and 2 whether the resistor is bolted to the chassis or not?

ignore for the moment that the replacement might be knacked too but i want to rule out the earthing issue before sourcing another resistor!!

thanks

Should work even without being bolted to earth/body :!:

 Try squeezing the connections on the base of the resister

mine was rusty around terminals, so i removed outer metal casing and cut out the resistor just leaving the three bits of wire hanging below the resistor and crimped on bullet crimps, cut the connector off the loom and bullet crimped them also, plugged them together and it works fine, used electrical tape and taped it to expansion tank over flow pipe, all good, been that way for nearly two months.

Maybe the scrap yard resistor is fubar'd like your existing one?

That's the problem with scrappers, no guarantee that the bits will work.

For the sake of £15, get a new one off eBay.

You can check the wireing with a jumper cable/wire. One of the terminals of the 3 pin plug for the resistor is main 12V feed from the heater switch, the other 2 to go back to the '1' and '2' switch positions. Bridge 2 terminals in the plug with the wire, connecting the main power to either of the other 2 will cause the heater fan to run when the switch is in the appropriate position - having a helper ... um.... helps here. Should the motor not run in a certain switch position could be the switch has melted - they do this for a pastime when the resistor contacts get a high resistance.
