mk3/4/5 locks, are they all the same?

Postby PerlSOL » Sun Feb 21, 2010 4:54 pm

I have found out about a local van rental company who is stripping a smiley, I spoke to him on Sat. about his locks and he said he had one key for all  BUT... I don't know what Mk his is... just established mine is a mk5 so was wondering if say his was a mk3 or 4... would all the locks still be direct replacements?

May sound like a silly question to some but I spent hours yesterday trying to swap a lock only to find out it was not the same... It could well have been off another door mind as the arm was slightly shorter.

I remember having a mk 3 minibus a few years ago that had worn out locks, my mate who works at the factory managed to "find" a set of mk 5 locks and they where different.

As far as I know there was a change; earlier ones held in by a forked sprung clip, later ones glued in and I am told a bugger to get out. Whether the earlier ones fit the later glued-in holes I have no idea.

mine are the steel clip type, that one I tried to fit in place of a broken one had the slots for the clip further up the lock so it wouldn't fit unless I removed the black surround.

Sierra/Mk4 escort fit Mk3 if you change the rear bit the rod sits in, smilies are differant but i cant remember how, supplyed some sierra locks to a mechanic for a Mk3 but when it arrived it was a smilie with a private plate (E at the end  ) he backed em cos they didn't fit, he did tell me why but at the time i was thinking of the petrol i'd waisted dropping em off not why they didn't fit

None of them are glued in!

There are 2 sorts of locks fitted to the mk3, one sort uses a flatish key, and the other uses the hexagonal type more modern fords use. I think all the hexagonal type barrels are compatable (but not 100% sure). I fitted a mk3 rear door to the back of my mk5 and my lock didnt fit - I had to file 4 small nicks into the door frame.
