Last gasp on this govener

Postby alandav123 » Wed Feb 24, 2010 1:06 pm

Hi all, if a silly person had went wild with a 13mm ringer and an allan key and totally played around with the govener set screw on the top of the fuel pump, is there a fool proof way to get it back to about right?
The van still starts and runs but goes really slow and is weak as water and is making a really metally ratteling noise/knocking.

Any help appreciated but if there is no way to do it I will have to book it in to a garage, I am scared to seize her up.

Regards Alan

If the pump is working correctly,(presuming you've got the right pump for the injectors) then a couple of clockwise turns should show some smoke.
How many turns have you done and is there any smoke when you blip the throttle ?

we talking bosch pump and the mid range adjustment under the little silver cap ?

if so from what i could find they are adjusted on a rig so theres no standard set up
if weak i would guess its been turned anticlockwise and needs turning clockwise to return to a near normal setting , if its too far clockwise it will make a load of smoke when the throttle is blipped , turn it in till then and back off a bit till its not too smoky when blipped , turn in gently though as i think it can force a seal if it goes too far

or thats how i understand it , sure some one will put you right if im wrong

Hi Guys, thanks for your input. Some new info today, I made an error thats easy to make when two things happen at roughly the same time. The goveneor screw was getting adjusted and the front end of the tranny was getting noiser and noiser and of course I lumped to two things in together. Well I had a right look today and there were only two bolts holding in the water pump pully the other two were loose, ands when the engine was running with no belts on ..it was smooth as silk. Two new bolts were made and the pulley was boxed up and the engine is now purring away.
I payed a guy about 6 weeks ago to change the belt and he had put the bolts back without locktight and they have come out altogether and nearly cause a big problem, I am off down south monday and that water pump pulley would never have made it, so it was a lucky escape.

I have gave the govenor screw a few turns clockwise and the tranny is running much better and I guess I will just experiment with the settings and road test then get a happy medium. As its got a ywears MOT now, the emmisions are not an issue so time is once again on my side.

Will take on board the above advice and apply it over the coming days.

So the lesson for today is not to assume two things are connected just because they happen at the same time.

i had them go on mine last year , took all the belts out , rocker shaft and all the push rods , so put another head on as a safety precaution , found a small crack which had been causing a slight water loss and lumpy idle while looking at it so did some good i suppose
