Maybe a bit more power?

Postby mr.blitz » Thu Mar 04, 2010 10:08 pm

I have nearly completed a very time consuming motorhome conversion. Along the way i have ended up with quite a lot of weight and a cruising speed of around 50-55mph and around 25-30mpg...i have a 5.14 diff.

I was looking at this mod...

viewtopic.php?f=18&t=3968

...and was wondering if anyone had successfully applied it to their diesel pump, It looks pretty straight forward.

This is an open question to anyone with anything to say about this mod...please...i am very interested in all views!! If you do reply, please can you answer these questions if at all possible...thanks so much.

What sort of increase in power is achieved by adjusting the pump only?

Should i also be looking to mod the EGR or is it possible to just turn the pump screw and have a positive result?

What is the effect on the MPG?

Is there any effect on engine temp, coolant or oil consumption?

Many thanks.

I've done these and basically,

1, If the EGR is slightly wrong then it will strangle the engine by not letting enough air in while excellerating, so best off doing the mod so that it can get as much air as it wants.

2, Turning the pump up wont get you any better top end speed as thats defined by your diff, but if its struggling to get there then it should help the excelleration depending on how much its turned up. No more than 2 turns or pop goes the weasle!

I only turned the screw half a turn to see if that would help mine and I think it has, I havent noticed any difference in MPG but I think that it would surely use slightly more fuel if it was turned up much more.

Its definatly worth doing and it shouldnt have any effect on anything else though.

Hope that helps.

agree with above, I did both mods at the same time, you wont notice much difference top end but the mid range power is much much better, before you alter the pump setting just have a look to see if the the little ali cap has any signs of removal, ie, edges forced up, if there are signs of removal its prob been adjusted before, if not turn it up no more than 2 turns, if it smokes just turn it back until the smoke stops, the difference is very noticeable
