Spare wheel hanger 1996 mk 5

Postby tranny mhan » Thu Mar 11, 2010 9:09 pm

Hi Guys

Firstly I have done a forum search and not found what I am looking for so here goes....There was no spare with my transit minibus so I sourced a wheel and rim the same size from my local car breakers but I do not have any idea as to how the mounting assembly for holding the spare rim under my van works...

Image

The bottom part of this assembly rotates and appears to be spring loaded but I have no figured out how this mechanism drops down to receive the spare wheel..

As per all advice is gratefully received....

Ooo... I never noticed that locking arm (in the middle) before??? I thought it was just the cable that held it up, it's obviously a safety feature.. does it need to be lined up??

push the jack handle through the hole in the rear cross member (which you can see when you open the rear doors)

This locates in the grey plastic bit, as you push it in it pushes the hook out. Then twist the jack handle and the wheel mount will lower. To raise it again do the same but reverse the twist

The mk4 version doesn't have the safety hook (and neither does my mk5 now! )

My spare wheel is on my roof rack as I thought mine was knackered, it might not be in that case. Minormatt is on this thread now :D so I will pop on a picture tomorrow and get the definitive answer.

They can and do rust solid - but its not *that* common - people often think they are broken when they arn't :?

1996 Mk5 190 Luton - mostly white, but some f**ker keeps leaving little patches of orangy-brown grafitti all over it!

Right guys I have managed to release this mechanism and mount the spare but I have noticed that the hanger bottom only has one mounting stud ( as per my photo in the first post)...I reckon there should be two, one on each side...Am I right...?

If I am right does the bottom part of the mechanism separate so a new hanger can be fitted or do I just need to weld a new part on to the hanger as I am not paying the £117 quoted on here for a new assembly..

Vehicles with 5 stud wheels only have the 1 wheel stud bit 8)

Spike - even if you could get that to go up and down it wouldnt be any good - the "flanges" the wheel sits on have been cut off... you might as well take it off and save 20P a year in diesel 8) or fit a new one -http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TRANSIT-SPARE-WHE ... 3a56dbb316
